afaik it's simply a leasing/parent co set up to lease the 320's back to airnz and in turn freedom.
the latest airnz newsletter said something along the lines of there's only going to be 1 or 2 yellow buses, and that koru-mounted 320's will be sharing the freedom load. we are starting to see korus turning up on freedom flights already.

Zeal 320 is the internal "Team Name" for Air NZ & Freedom A320 ops. A fluffy name created to make everyone involved feel part of the same team and try to remove the devisive us & them atmosphere.
It was reported in the internal Air NZ "Us" fortnightly newsletter, that eventually the Freedom brand will disappear and the Zeal brand created for public appearance.

S2K which edition was that? I would be very surprised if they were intending on doing that.
Nafai, in the air it is Free Air but everywhere else, Freedom. As I understand it there was already an operator out there somewhere in the pacific (Hawaii maybe?) with the callsign Freedom Air so our friendly CAA made them change it.

Almost, MDA
Freedom is the callsign of a Phillipines based GA type operator. FreeAir has always been the official Freedom callsign......but "Freedom" was generally used and tolerated by ATC.
From time to time, someone in ATC gets a wee bee in their bonnet and starts using the "proper" FreeAir callsign (often heard from Wellington Tower)
This time it was Aussie ATC who (for the second time) issued a directive to controllers to use "FreeAir" for Freedom flights.
After some discussion (and several safety reports from pilots) airline management decided that aircraft regos should be used until the callsign debate could be sorted once and for all.Apparently FreeAir was not favoured as it sounded a bit cheap and nasty. Eventually "FreeAir" was re-adopted, but things may yet change again. "Zeal" callsigns for all Air NZ group A320s perhaps, or maybe just "New Zealand" across the whole group?
As mentioned, ZEAL 320 is the name of the A320 operating company, although the Freedom brand will continue as a "product" of the Air NZ group. Freedom services (like Air NZ ones) can be flown by either Freedom or Air NZ A320 pilots and aircraft. There is currently only 1 yellow aircraft (the 2nd one to have the Looney Tunes decal treatment), but there is possibly going to be another eventually. Freedom staff now all wear the Air NZ uniform too so from the passenger point of view, it all looks the same. Just the service levels vary between Air NZ and Freedom product (same "buy your food" on Freedom, and full service on Air NZ)
Confused yet??

Actually, there's nothing new there. Freedom was originally set up under the auspices of the Mt Cook Group as South Pacific Air Charters. A bit before my time, but it is/was no secret.
As for Freedom F/As getting smarter.......well the sensible ones were out voted on their second contract ratification some months back. Instead of trying for a significant base salary increase, they settled for a small hourly allowance increase, and a pitiful one-off "shoe payment". It appears they were poorly represented by their union. Bet the management types were laughing all the way to the bank.
