Question EK's coming to town

Tomorrow evening will be the night of nights for many young, and old aspiring pilots wanting a gig or their first break in the airline industry. For me it will hopefully be a much deserved break from flying the usual clapped out, under performing noise generators of the 70's. But this will also be the first experience for me where the airline has come to me instead. So what can myself and others expect? How will the interview process be structured and what are the hurdles that need to be overcome to progress to the next stage? I can't see them doing the sim rides at the Duxton Hotel!

Do you have a minimum of 2000 hours jet time on aircraft above 55 tonnes?

No I do not, I realise that EK are famous for only recruiting high time pilots but there is obviously some degree of urgency if they are coming to oz? The high min's they are settings obviousy aren't getting them the number of pilots they need. Unless you have the inside level change...

Unfortunately I do not have any inside information, however, my letter states that suitably qualified applicants with an active online application will be considered for a simulator evaluation. Minimum requirements may be viewed at the Emirates group careers website.

Dear oh dear, why dont you lads go and have a nice long read on the middle east forum. There you will get some idea what a sh#t outfit your thinking of joining. Take the blinkers off and also take ear to what most of the brothers there are trying to tell you all. Shiney buildings, shiney aircraft and third world living, education, management, and the list goes on and on and on. Surely there are still some intelligent drivers in Oz that can see through all this. You move out of Oz, and you will regret every minute of it after the honeymoon is over. Guys from VB have gone over and have had a gut full already. I do believe not even six months have passed. But, then again, they were told.

Did anybody attend the open day in Melbourne yesterday?
Were there many there?
What was on offer? Any changes in the requirements, or other sense of panic?
I suspect most were just curious and not planning an actual move to the sand pit! Might have to try and make one of the others, just so I can hear first hand.
Cheers, HH.

Well it seems that the EK roadshow was so successful that the SIMs had to be canceled....ooops...I meant postponed due to lack of interest. The UK tour starts soon (todayish). Will the lure of the sun be enough to tempt the POMs away from their frozen wasteland?

I wonder what will happen next. Will EK reduce the requirements that FOs need to join, knowing they will be in the right hand seat for a long time; or will they increase the money and try and relight the desire of living and working in sand?

With one aeroplane a month this year, and two a month for most of next year, I think we will not have to wait too long to find out. I think the money option has little chance of seeing the light of day.

Remember in the not too distant past when Cathay would only look at experienced jet pilots ? How times have changed, got a mate in there whose best type on his licence was a Navajo.

Obviously with all the dissatisfaction in Emirates and a worldwide shortage of pilots with EXPERIENCE on DECENT types they will have to lower their sights a bit if they cannot attract the sort of applicants they want.

Maybe it wouldn't be such a good move for Virgin Blue pilots, but there are plenty of people on award, or sub award conditions flying piston and turbines around who realistically won't go any higher in Australia, and whose only career move is abroad.

Whilst Emirates may have problems, it's still a lot better than living in an aboriginal community in NT and flying a Baron for $35 000/year.

P.S. If you don't like the salary you know what you can do, I've got a drawer full of applications here. Allowances, holiday pay ? ha ha ha ha

Obviously they are not good enough for you.

Easy sollution for EK, the pay even though tax free is poor & the cost of living is high in DBX, therefore to be competative double the pay, open overseas basings & produce a better roster.
