Music to my ears, Borg (not to mention at least about 2500 others, and all those waiting!)! How convinced are you that the informant is correct?
As Keg said, I've aged considerably these last few months!

I would be very surprised if this is true. I am almost certain they will opt for either the A340-500 or the A350.
The A380 can be likened to a Trojan horse. Companies that have ordered it will find it increasing difficult to purchase Boeings for a number of reasons. One of the main reasons is the idea of CCQ (cross crew qualification) and MFF (mixed fleet flying).
QF is a perfect example. The fleet already comprises A330’s with A380’s on the way. Consider if QF could have crew endorsed on both A330 and A340 (Training only takes 3 days from the A330 to the A340 and 1 Day the other way) and also later on the A380. Second officers could be “endorsed” on all three for around the same cost as a current 744 course.
With this system, the aircraft type can be changed at late notice to suit demand and the crew can be rostered more efficiently. As far as F/A’s go, the rostering would be assisted by a remote base in London for example!
Overtime, this can translate into very big savings. If used to full effect, it can also blow Boeings “point to point” theory clean out of the water. Ie Rather than having a Boeing 777-200LR aircraft flying point to point, have a fully loaded A330, A350 or A380 fly the route as demanded.
I believe if QF were going to order the 777 it would have happened a long time ago. There is lot riding on this decision. Cathay has not ordered the A380 yet and is playing its cards close to its chest. SQ wants to fly over the pond. Emirates are ready to just buy the whole country. I think it will be some time before a deal is closed.
Just my two bobs worth.
Cheers.

The email I received was saying it was a fait accompli. It may be a Boeing factory rumour though, my informant is a systems engineer for Boeing.
I am on to it... stand by for future updates..

Dicko has already hit the cross fleet thing on the head by saying that cross fleet issues don't matter it is how much you pay for the aircraft when you buy them. That was an answer he gave to a direct question in regard to the aircraft menagerie that he was creating!
Airbus will have to lift their game in the quality department because the A330's QF have caused fairly large headaches for various people involved. But they are CHEAP!

blueloo you have to tell me...how does shuting down an engine on a bus put it into landing mode? Have sat up the front of these things for a little while now and have yet to do this...am I missing out on something?
Good news if QF does get the 777...very nice aeroplane.

If QF buy the B777 then I'd wager serious money that the B744 Second Officers will be dual endorsed on the B777. Other savings would be achieved in that the conversion course for us Boeingphiles will be much shorter onto the B777 than having our brains totally reprogrammed with ze French way of operating machines that commit aviation.
Apart from that the direct operating costs of the B777-300ER leave the A340-600HGW dead in the water.
The delay in delivery of the A380 may cause the QF board to accelerate its decision as there will now be a severe capacity shortage in the second half of 2006.
May we live in interesting times. GB

Crystalball, I might be wrong here but I think the 380 will not allow CCQ from the 330/340. The 380 is a new starting point for the bus. Don, shutting down two engines puts the 330 into land mode!! but I'd like to hear more about the one engine theory...blueloo can you help?
