Airline initial training

Gudday all,

Anyone able to jot a few notes down as to the training basics of the airlines. The scenario involves a successful interview and acceptance onto a ground course/ simulator training.

What is involved in the training???

Company SOP's
Type training
Pressurization
Oxygen use
CRM human factors etc

In particular imagine having left the GA scene, how does one go about training for say a turbo prop?

Medium turns, Emergency gear extension, Steep turns, feathering etc.

Is all this taught on the sim ie handling?

What is normal in regards to line training , airport checks etc??

Any info greatly appreciated.

If anyone could outline say Eagle or Air Nelson training syllabus or a regional airline similar that would be great.

Don't know bout Air Nelly but with Eagle you get to go on a 'Ground Course' where u are told how complex and sophisticated the B1900D is and then, because of the complixity involved, you are given all the answers to the questions. After this you get to go for a trip over to Canada where you do all the basic stuff in a sim (turns, stalls, engine out's, EMERG Procedures etc etc) +drink heaps of piss. You then get to come back to NZ and brag about what a great trip you had at the companies expense, about how much piss u sunk on tour and about how damn complex yet extremely simple the B1900D is.
For the first lil while u get to fly with an ex aero club CFI (currently employed as a training capt.) S/he will bombard you with questions on the systems and performance of the machinery (grab a Queenair manual and u should b sorted - less the pressurisation and turbine stuff) and when you have done 50 sectors you get to go for a flight with a "FLIGHT EXAMINER" who will fail you straight away. After failling, you get dragged in front of the big shots and asked 'Why did u fail? We took u through the most thorough interviewing process in the country and sure, u truned the wrong way in the sim check but thats ok so has everyone else. We then put u thru the most difficult groundcourse known to man (wink wink) then we spent all that money sending you over to Canada and training u on line. So, Why did you fail???' That's when u turn around and say 'Cheers for the rating. I'm off to Dubai. PS next time u may want to do a check on my background, I failed my last four IF renewals. See U.'

readbackcorrect,

To answer your question seriously, the Eagel format is....

Day 1/2 Head to the home base HLZ for induction, ID's, manuals, contract paperwork, pay periods & payment procedures ( you are a self-employed contractor to start with), rosters etc. Spend some time with a senior bod doing dry runs of the Engine failure/V1 cuts in the "procedural trainer" ( a cockpit mockup on plywood, close to 1:1 scale except for the Alt Static switch which is about 6:1). Start studying the SOPs as you depart for Toronto in 3 days and need to be familiar enough with them in time for your first sim session on Monday.

Day 3 Spend time with crews on revenue flights "observing" from seat 1F

Day 4 - 18 Travel & Sim training in Toronto. Arrive Friday nowadays (no overnight in LA anymore me thinks) 2 days off to acclimatise then Sim sessions Mon - Fri, Sat off, Sim check on Sunday, Monday off (go to Niagra etc in company supplied rental) Travel home on Tues arriving Thursday morn (NZ time)

Sim sessions cover Type Training incl. basic manuovers, V1 Cuts IF flying, 2 crew ops & CRM, to the point where you can basically complete an IF flight including a couple of emergency procedures, landing off a S/E ILS to minimas.

Get 4-5 days off on return to NZ. Start Line training. First day a Training /Admin Day where Eagle SOPS discussed, normal flying day procedures, external preflights etc. Done with your 1st Training Capt.

Line training now takes the form of 4-5 weeks with 2/3 training captains. First 20 odd sectors just normal procedures/SOPS. After that the TRG Capt starts adding simulated emergency procedures. Discusses each system etc several times until you can competantly discuss their operation and failure scenarios. First half of training now incorporates GPS training. A Progress check (training flight non-revenue/ not a PASS/Fail flight) about half way through training includes a GPS endorsement (this part of the flight is PASS/FAIL) The bulk of the flight is s/e & low level circuits incl. extensive Flight Director use . After 80-90 sectors, your first check is a Normal Ops Check conducted on a revenue flight which is check of compliance with SOPS and some simulated Emerg Procedures. Pass that then you can go onto the Check to Line flight, where all will be tested incl. a V1 cut on departure, engine fire starting the approach, s/e app & mapp, low level go-arounds (s/e & m/e) unusual attitudes etc

Checked to line you are let loose on the network.

After that there only a few restrictions that may be placed on you, such as no night landings at WRE as a Co unless you are WRE based and have been checked into WRE by night.

Other than that, expect another IF check 3 months after your initial line check, and another 3 months later and a full renewal 3 months after that. Basically expect a check every 3 months either a 180 day check, Normal SOPs check or Full renewal.

Basically the training is very good and only assumes that you are a competant IF flyer. If you still getting to grips with IF whilst training then you may struggle.
