Hervey Bay runway not suitable for Jets!
It would appear Hervey Bay's new $11M runway and terminal might be a waste of tax payers money. The new runway has failed test(s) conducted by CASA. One of the tests was to check the visibility from the threshold and it was this test the runway failed big time. From the threshold they must be able to see a cone located 600 m from the threshold, apparently they could only see 300-400 m.
The reason for the visibilty problem is the "hub" that been created during the runway extension. Rather than this "hub" being located halfway along the runway it is situated at approximately the 1000 ft marker area, hence the visibility problem.
It would appear the council have approved a lake/pond that is located just outside of the airport, however it is located below the approach to runway 11. This lake/pond has now caused a "duck problem" for aircraft on approach to runway 11.
So at this stage the airport is not certified for RPT jet operations, so both Virgin Blue and Jetstar cannot operate into Hervey Bay.
