It seems that providing selected parts of the story helps make the story that little more juicy!!

The requirements for future A380 FO's to have prior A330 time applies to crews for the first 2 acft only.

The only pre-requirement for FO A380 is FO time on another company acft; if that isnt A330 then 'experience will be provided' prior to converting to A380.

AO coming up to 3 years in operation; suprise suprise initial contracts 3 years, so now seeing first group of returnees. AO captains advertised to replace CAPTS returning to mainline; FO training for AO has only recently been completed and less FO's returning to mainline.

AO 6th acft has been delayed; but AO will be here longer than the end of the year.

Gents

with out giving to much away-- otherwise it will be my demise as well --long term fleet planning and i stress long term-- the A330 fleet will be moved to AO -if its still a sound operation well after the A380 as been /established on QF mainline --the B767 fleet will be approching the end of their usefull lives around 2008-2012-- b787 will be the replacement with some configured for domestic ops and some for the international routes the A330 operates plus development of new ones. the A380/B777 are the combination that will replace the b743/4 fleet in the distantant future -- hull numbers yet to be decided --but i can tell you the economics of the B777/B787 has been very closely looked at--
i'm not trying to stir s t up --but i have to be very carefull what i say and keep it simple.

close to the heartbeat

Gigi, I'm not bidding for the A380. I've spent too many years slagging Airbus design philosophy to jump onto the thing now. With luck (and the right decisions by QF along the way!), I'll be a Boeing driver forever!

Oracle, the 787 would seem a perfect fit for AO operations....disregard, we need to do something with the A330s that will justify the amount of wasted money we spent on them don't we!

Yes ...... in the short term ...OJS,T,U B744's will be retained in addition to the 6 B744ER's..... too much money spent on them not to get some return before retirement.
And what about -OJH? I think officially it's now only 6 years old.

Is AO's future assured and will there continue to be a place for it in the QF stable of airlines ?

Yes, a few B744s are only 6 years old. Would be a total waste if they were retired!

I can't imagine the Qantas fleet with B744s

VH-QPC only just got upgraded didn't it? However, I'd rather see the 787s doing the current A333 routes around Asia

I would be VERY surprised to see the closure of AO. This business is part of the master plan - erode the conditions of the legacy mainline!!

I normally don't care about what happens to the A330 as it doesn't effect my part of the world, but in relation to all the A330's 'going' to AO consider this.

If existing AO / QF pilots are to crew this change in type it would require massive training costs.

I assume that most of the existing AO pilots will want to stay in CNS. Also most if not all of the current mainline A330 pilots will not wish to move to CNS.

Bare in mind also that there are two A330 basings, and the simulator is in melbourne. Presumably it would have to be moved also.

So if the 'aircraft swap' option happens, it is potentially not economically viable for existing crew members of both airlines to be used to fly the AO 330 operation.

The alternative then would be to bring in outside contractors - something the AO CP has expressed interest in in the past.

Just hope the A380 has an airconditioning system that can cope, unlike the 400. All those sweaty feet down the back, upstairs as well as down.

The A330 fleet is going to see pilots who are currently on 2 year contracts on the A320 with Jet* move across on to it, as it gets fed into the AO network.
Jet* will remain as a purely domestic operation, with AO picking up some of the higher capacity, major capital city routes as well as the current and future international routes.

Expect to see AO grown some more, not only with route structures, but also with other aircraft types (don't imagine that all new aircraft will be replacement types for QF!).
