International LCC - What is it?
In recent weeks the talk of a Low Cost International Airline has escalated with even QF CEO GD muttering about it.
So, the $64k question is:
What constitutes a Low Cost International Carrier?
Most Low Cost models are based around:
• Reduced turnaround times and aircraft utilisation
• Lack of In-flight food, amenities and entertainment
• Reduced seat pitch and legroom
• Internet booking
With International you cannot get increased utilisation other than just going 2 hours after you get anywhere. Curfews in SYD and LHR kill the prospect of that.
Put people on an aeroplane for 20+ hours and are they really going to go without some niceties?
Reduce the pitch and legroom and the DVT claims go through the roof.
Everyone does Internet booking.
So, where is Lassiters Reef?
Let me guess, reduced operating cost for your aeroplane. In other words reduced labour costs. Well, there are already a number of reduced labour cost Airlines about, mostly Chinese carriers that pay tuppence for labour. Let them operate over Syd – Sin – Lhr and see how they go.
Otherwise look forward to constant attack on your salaries and a desire by airline management to see you work longer hours.
Will it take a fatigue related accident to convince the regulators of these airlines that their sole responsibility in all of this is the safe operation of aeroplanes and the safety of all involved?
If say CASA implement the current draconian rules that Emirates have just had their regulator approve, would the Board of CASA be liable in the event of an accident? Would the Board of the airline approaching CASA for the dispensation be liable?
What are your thoughts on what is a Low Cost International Carrier and your guess (not being Lawyers) on Corporate liability in the event of an accident.

Probably "cost sensitive" would be a better way to look at it. An all economy B747 (cheaper than A380 at present) would represent excellent cost/ASK.
I imagine Mr Dickson is talking of extending the AO model.

I think Freddie Laker tried International LCC in UK back in the 60's with some DC10s across the Atlantic. Basically cheap planes , lower staff salaries and minimum service. I think the big gorillas just undercut him til he went broke.

Mr Approach,
Freddy was ahead of his time. Where are those big gorillas now?
BA, Pan AM, Lufthansa, TWA. Either gone or shadows of their former selves.
The market is ripe for a low cost international carrier. Low cost not low class.
A wide body with economy seating throughout. Good legroom. Full catering for purchase or BYO. Top IPE. (IPE = ICE but in an aircraft!! )
It can be done.

DLFokker - International LCCs are here already with excellent nett remit deals on Austrian, Emirates, JAL and numerous others flying around the edges or the Kangaroo route. Gulf is as cheap as chips on many runs too. The beauty of these carriers is that they actuall cover a lot mor ports than just London at the same level.
KLM/MH codeshare flights can be had for a song.
This is using full service airlines and good ones at that. The Brittania theory of stuffing as many people as possible into a 767-200 seems to have run its course. great crews, but crap configuration for the victims.
Branson also took BA to task, but I believe he had to sell off Virgin Records to fund it. I did see some footage of BA stooges scragging passengers in the car park at LHR and offering them money not to fly with VS. Now that is LOW!

The airlines you mention are not LCCs. They are just more efficient than those I mentioned. The White Rat is the last of those to be "readjusted"
Lets see what the next week brings to the OZ scene??

No DLF, they are not LCC's and that is just the point. There is little room for LCCs on the European route when mainline carriers offer a decent number of seats at bargain basement prices. i guess this is their way to keep them out of their hair.
A week is a long time in Airlines DLF - I am getting far too old (turn 49 on Tuesday) to handle much more change.
Best regards
