Staid Aussies skip sexy sites

Internet search engine Google's annual global round-up of top search terms for the web, and Australia has proved far more business-minded than the US.

What people search for has become big business as the company has redefined online advertising by targeting ads to key words. But what people search for has also become a living mirror of people's tastes around the world.

In this year's rankings of the top search terms, Britney Spears, Paris Hilton, Christina Aguilera and Pamela Anderson clogged the top four web searches in the US.

But in Australia the far less sexy crowd of Qantas, Trading Post and Virgin Blue edged out the hotel heiress, Ms Hilton, who finished fourth.

The list marks a noted shift in web use, said Jason Juma-Ross, a technology trend researcher at AMR Interactive. "Why bother entering a URL (or web address) when you can just go to Google, is what people say now," he said.

Perhaps Australians already know where to find the good stuff, and don't need to search for it
