Phone blamed for Sydney Airport scare
11:00 AEST Wed Sep 29 2004
A mobile phone accidentally left turned on in luggage is being blamed for a security scare at Sydney Airport last night which left tens of passengers from a Virgin Blue flight stranded overnight.
The Melbourne-bound plane was due to take off shortly before 10pm, but news of the phone forces its immediate evacuation, with baggage handlers scouring the hold to find it.
“Nobody's given us an answer, all they did was turn around and said was there was a mobile phone stuck in the cargo hole, and everybody had to get off,” said passenger Peter Chronakis.
“Twenty-four hours later we're still stuck at the airport.”
Tensions grew in the terminal as the phone eluded searchers.
“It’s just been disastrous, kids crying, people pushing and shoving to get put on buses, it was horrible,” recalled passenger Sandra Megarry.
Businessman Bobby Amin said: “It's an absolute joke, complete waste of time, I was meant to be in Melbourne last night, it's now 7.30am in the morning, I've got appointments all day today, so I'm very, very put out.”
The baggage handlers union said the incident highlighted the lack of security coordination at Virgin, amid claims untrained staff were sent to retrieve a bag from a Singapore Airlines flight on Monday after a passenger said there was a bomb in his baggage.
“There has been no training, there's no coordinating authority of what to do, how to do it, what processes to follow to make sure this is dealt with by the appropriate authorities,” said Tony Sheldon from the Transport Workers Union.
He’s called for government intervention.
“It's like sending canaries down a mineshaft, [but] in this case it's real people.”

Pax to FA: "I think i've left my phone on in my bag that I have checked in"
FA: OK, no problem Ill let the CS know.
Eventually Captain and Ground crew find out about it and after the plastering the company has (rightly or wrongly) been given in the media they decide to find the phone.
Phone search takes longer than initially thought due to arrivals and lean numbers of staff (another issue entirely) and eventualy the aircraft is too late to depart due to Curfew restrictions at Syd.
A/C is "evacuated" and pax shunted off to busses.
Pax arrive at airport for their flight only to discover that the aircraft is further delayed due to miserable weather in Melbourne
Cld Bkn002 and viz of 1000m in fog.
An absolutly deplorable situation!
Well done chanel nine.
Are Virgin staff now loading SQ aircraft at SYD?

What is going on here. VB follow the correct safety procedure because of a forgetful pax and the union and media do a number on them.
This must seem like deja-vous for any ex Ansett worker. Thanks TWU, trying to destroy another 4,000 jobs.

Just who employs the boys and girls that carry out security checks, both in the terminal and elsewhere? And since when is a mobile phone, accidently left on, a security issue?

What's a security check got to do with checked baggage Kanga?
My preferred announcement would be..."ladies and Gentlemen, due to this person in front of me leaving their phone on in their luggage, your flight has been cancelled. As it's not our fault, we suggest you speak with this person...Goodnight!"

The only way around these sorts of problems is to educate passengers about the realities of aircraft safety and their role in the packing of bags etc.
If they are made accountable, then hopefully they will think twice before doing anything that may hold up airliners/airports.
If this sort of thing becomes a regular occurrence then bet your life some sort of rules will be enacted.

Virgin is not run out of Sydney. Virgin is a threat to Qaintarse. Jamie Packer is a Qantas Board member and owns channel nine. Richard Branson does not like the Sydney push who run this country. Go figure....
The same treatment was given to Coles Myer until they appointed a Sydney based board member (kermit the frog).
Virgins troubles would dissappear overnight if he appointed Graham Richardson, or Paul Keating or even Kermit Griener to the board.

Sunfish I have to disagree with you here.
This Sydney mafia vs Melbourne mafia sounds like shiite.
These people are businessmen and are out to make a profit.
Same thing goes with the people they do business with.
Chris Corrigan (the man that broke the backs of the waterfront) is a very large shareholder and a good businessman.
The petty politics you mention here would never deter a good businessman from making responsible decisions accordingly.
It could be run from the Cayman islands for all we know and could be done so effectively and with good staff.
BTW Sunfish, Graham Richardson especially or Paul Keating just arent the sort of people you would want on your board of directors, especially after the negative publicity and associations with certain individuals of late.
Does the word Swiss Bank Account ring a bell???

Tunguska, I know what I was instructed t o do at a meeting in about 79 or 80 regarding the way Qantas was run and its "special" relationship with Sydney. I have seen zero behaviour since that would change my opinion and plenty of behaviour that reinforces it, such as the machinations of Trevor Kennedy.
We now have the situation where Qantas is a brand name and the largest shareholder is an American Nominee company holding shares for who? The tooth fairy? Its probably Packer judging by the negative press that the packers are giving VB, and Yes they do interfere in editorial matters, that was established at the time of the attempt to buy Fairfax with the Hollinger syndicate.
You are right about them wanting to make a profit, but considering the range of the activities of the "businessmen" on the Qantas Board, that profit might be crystallised in the Cayman Islands and not for the benefit of the small shareholder either.
I still remember Rupert and Peter's sale of ANsett DC9s to Evergreen, need I say more?
And furthermore, I like many other people have been stranded by f****ing Qantas for various reasons and treated like s**t, but does it make the papers???? Of course not!
