Federal Election & Our Future (Aviation)
I bit sensitive perhaps but this is an anonomous forum.....
Just curious to hear a few thoughts on the present policies the parties are throwing about regarding aviation from those with a good idea of the topic.
For example, I understand if Labour gets in then they will increase the ticket levy applied to all airline tickets, hence not overly beneficial for us as an industry??!!
Anything else that will effect "us" please fill me in! Unfortunately I've been away a bit much and haven't had the chance to really understand what is going on and the ramifications either way should whomever get in office.....

sadly the aviation sector in this country is small, and not really capable of making a difference to who gets elected, hence Aviation is not high on anyones agenda,
Its my view that no matter who comes out on top in October, there will be little if no noticable change in policy. If Latham (god forbid) gets in, his government will take directions from AsA and CASA, and nothing will happen.
If Howard stays in, we will continue on our present path, pending court cases sadly.
I think GA and other parts of the Industry will have to have a UnCFIT before anyone will do anything constructive, because then, other sectors of Industry will be effected.

It is hard to get definitive statements of policy from the major parties; too much pork-barrelling and pragmatism to be indulged in at this stage of the campaign.
The only Aviation policy I have found stated on the web is that of the Greens, and it's a doozy. I admit that I have always been a bit of a greenie and I ride my bike to the airport, make compost and walk around the yard naked.
I liked their policy right up till it said:

3.15 Recognising that air transport causes considerable environmental damage and is also less fuel efficient by a large factor particularly to transport by rail or by sea, the Australian Greens consider it important that the environmental costs of air transport are taken into account openly and incorporated into the cost of air travel.
3.16 The Australian Greens believe there are many unexplored possibilities for decreasing the dependence on air travel. One of these is the expansion of teleconferencing. In general, the Australian Greens will support measures such as tax incentives which will encourage people to travel less by air.
3.17 The Australian Greens recognise that bad planning in a number of cases has caused housing areas near airports to have an unacceptable noise level and support moves to remedy such mistakes, for example through modifying flying patterns and airport operations and compensating residents in the most affected areas.

wholly ****e! If the green get in, I look forward to rocking up at the terminal (will that be Kinsford smith or Botany) and getting a nice short ship ride to LA! or London for that matter!

Don't knock it mate, it's beautiful. As the Greens are giving their preferences to Labor, a few more policy statements like that will ensure that nobody with any sanity at all will vote Green ( or should I say, Brown?) One less vote for Greens is one less vote for Labor.

Pretty funny that Greens members of parliament still fly around during the election campaign. I thought they'd have a combie van or something 
I seem to remember a few years ago a greens senator leaving an abandoned on 1980's pollution maker that had died in another senators parking spot!

Yes, I agree, pretty illinformed and arrogant policy. They obviously don't have someone to advise them (maybe one of us should do it?). But at least they are even thinking of aviation, what about the others?
I believe, if a green government wants to look at the aircraft/pollution problem and "ease the squeeze" on the envirament, then why not offer tax concessions to Aussie companies willing to invest in the interests of designing engines/modifications etc. to existing piston engines, currently running on leaded fuel. Other makers of the smaller turbines from overseas should also be enticed here with tax incentives, as long as the development work was in accordance with efficency and less lead producing engines. And the spin off for Australia would also be the investment and jobs.

The Greens or any other party do not do deals it give preferences.
What they do is give deals to put preferences on "How To Vote" cards. Nothing else.
You the voter descides where your preference goes.
If you follow the How To Vote card, then yes you are putting your preferences to where the party wants, but you do not have too.
You can put Greens 1, Social Democrats 2, One Nation 3 then Labour or libs next in what ever order you want.
In the Senete if you only put a 1 above the line, then yes you are putting your preference as per the "Deal", but you can still fill out every box below the line in what ever order you feel like!!

Can't say that I'm shocked by the "Green" policies. And I thought we were the ones who were meant to have our heads in the clouds......
Found out today also that if Labour get in they will abolish the Superannuation Co-Contribution scheme; that being (and it is means tested) where the government will match you dollar for dollar, to a point, of added contributions you make into your super fund.
Still haven't been able to dig much more up on the Labour plan to increase the tax levy on airline tickets............ And I thought the theory was to promote employment and industry growth?
