Arrest after alleged air rage
15sep04
PASSENGERS and crew of a Perth-bound Qantas flight were forced to handcuff a man to his seat after he became agitated and abusive, police said today.
The 33-year-old man was on a Qantas flight from Adelaide about 9pm (WST) yesterday when he became abusive toward fellow passengers, WA Police said.
"For some reason he got agitated and began swearing at passengers and carrying on," Sergeant Graham Clifford said.
A female flight attendant who tried to calm down the man was also verbally abused, prompting five male passengers to intervene, Sgt Clifford said.
"On the flight he was overpowered by about five passengers and crew and he was plastic flexi-cuffed to the chair," he said.
"That was on the direction of the pilot."
Police were waiting for the flight when it arrived in Perth but during efforts to arrest the man he allegedly kicked in a Qantas boarding pass reader, worth about $5000.
"He was taken into custody and on the way to the watchhouse he has kicked one of the windows of the police van in," Sgt Clifford said.
The man, from Como in Perth's south, has been charged with two counts of criminal damage and is due to appear in Perth Magistrate's Court this morning.

Well what can one expect when we close all the asylumns and spread the inmates around amongst us.
"Be Alert" we are advised.
As well as potential terrorists include the mentally deranged or are they all from the same bin?

Saw the report on Channel 7 news (in Perth) and I applaud the crew and passengers who retrained this man, he was not a small man by any measure, looked quite aggro. (not that I wouldnt be by having the media shoving a camera in my face...)
And just to clear it up for the eastern states people, Como "in Perth's south" is a suburb no more then 5km from what passes as the CBD of Perth, and parts of it are quite affluent.

Well done for the crew as well. Very difficult times indeed for you to have to work in.

It's end of footy season time again folks and boy do the teams love to fly. Always makes for some interesting flights with the APS folks getting a workout at the airports.

You'd have thought the aviation industry was able to recognise psychotics and their behaviour by now.
One test, is whether they are capable of understanding and executing a normal, routine and simple request or function without exhibiting aggresion.
From what I saw of the gentleman, they were 5 brave lads indeed.
Would be interested to know if they did a blood test for drugs?

Wirraway
I cant believe Wirraway ALMOST commented!!
This thread has become very hard to deal with. People should never bag where other people come from. That simply sucks.
Who cares how long it takes " to have your tray taken away"?
What is it where people here like to jump up and find some nasty comment about Virgin or Qantas?
It really ruins it all for me ( but not you Wirraway!)
