Australian Airlines pump $800m into Qld
18:23 AEST Tue Jun 1 2004

Australian Airlines' decision to base its aviation hub in Cairns will pump $800 million into the Queensland economy this financial year.

The Qantas leisure subsidiary, which launched a one-class service into Asia 18 months ago, recently welcomed its one millionth customer.

Australian Airlines chief executive Andrea Staines said the carrier was in profit, its fleet had grown to five planes and it had doubled its route network in the last 12 months with six new ports.

But the other winner has been Queensland.

"The Australian Airlines story is a very exciting one for the Queensland economy and for the Cairns economy in particular," she told journalists at the Australian Tourism Exchange conference in Melbourne.

"Overall the effect on the Queensland economy is now around $800 million a year, and with a bit of growth we can see that going through the billion dollar mark very soon." With 400 employees in Cairns it is estimated the carrier, through international tourism and aviation expenses, directly and indirectly injects around $730 million into the northern Queensland city.

The airline estimates it also injects around $70 million into the Gold Coast tourist strip.

Ms Staines said Australian Airlines plans to include a sixth aircraft in its fleet, boosting capacity by 20 per cent and allowing the opening of new ports.

"India is still something we are looking at," she said.

"We will look at whether we can possibly service it non-stop, for example out of Perth."

She said Perth could also one day have services to China and Japan.

Ms Staines said Australian Airlines, with its focus on tourism destinations rather than capital cities, should not be affected by low-cost carriers springing up throughout Asia.

"They are very much focused on high frequency, fast turnaround, point-to-point traffic, high yielding short haul," she said.

"We are in the medium-haul business and we are carrying passengers on holiday destinations - people who are still spending a large amount of disposable income.

"So we are a fundamentally different market."

Aussie so far Australian Airlines has recruited its pilots from Qantas and I imagine that this will continue.
However I've not heard of any further expansion for a while now.
