Qantas looks to Asia for growth
May 31, 2004 - 3:33PM

Qantas will add three weekly direct flights to Shanghai in December as part of its aggressive strategy to win business in the world's fastest growing economies, the national carrier said today.

Qantas' executive general manager John Borghetti said the airline would target China and India - countries it had identified for their growth potential.

"We believe it is the future for us - India and China," he told journalists at the Australian Tourism Exchange.

"You can understand that when you look at their GDP growing (annually) by about seven per cent".

Last year 176,000 Chinese arrived in Australia and this is expected to increase to 960,000 by 2013.

As part of Qantas' growth strategy, the airline's two new two-class Airbus A330-300, fitted with sleeper seat Skybeds, will start services between Sydney and Shanghai on December 2.

The flights will leave Australia on Tuesdays, Thursday and Sundays, departing in the morning and arriving in the evening.

Mr Borghetti said with China "growing significantly", he expected over the next 12 months more direct services to the world's most populous nation.

Qantas is also eyeing growth opportunities in India, with the carrier starting three direct flights to Mumbai in September.

Mr Borghetti said with the number of Indians expected to travel outside the country to rise from 4.7 million last year to 50 million in 2020 there were excellent opportunities to expand services.

Mr Borghetti said Qantas will also increase its current 31 flights a week to Hong Kong.

"Hong Kong itself is a great opportunity," he said.

"Recent negotiations ... between the two governments has seen significant growth in capacity allowable over the next two years and we intend to take up some of that growth.

"You will certainly see Qantas playing a much bigger role in the Hong Kong market, not just as a destination but as a mid point to London."

Mr Borghetti said the company had "great expectations" of a joint low cost service in Singapore with Qantas as a 49 per cent shareholder.

He said there were also plans to increase services to the United States and New Zealand, while the company was increasing capacity to Japan.

"Qantas is very much focused on growth over the next three years," he said.

"Although we compete with 44 international carriers that operate into this country .... we believe that growth is the future for this airline."
