THe small things that make your day

Dunno bout you guys but just found this when seeing how much work I was going to do today

WELLINGTON (NZWN):

METAR NZWN 160200Z 16013KT 15KM -SHRA FEW015 SCT021 BKN035 11/08
Q1014 TEMPO 7000 SHRA RMK KAUKAU 17023KT RAINBOW TO SE =

Or like yesterday when a Saab was asked if he'd like the amended TAF of Aucks , he replied only if theres anything sexy in it.

Just woundering what else turns those moments of sittin there doing very little into moments of laughter.

Having the F/O pause in the middle of Pushback request to PH ACD because he can't remember which bay we're on (because no one paints the bay number on the RHS), (neither can I unless I look at the painted number out my side ), and cheeky ACD controller replies;

"ABC Bay ......................... 9, pushback approved"

Or, on descent into CS, female F/O has just established comms with approach and then calls company, handing ATC comms to me. Approach give a clearance to a lower level.

Approach's immediate retort on hearing me readback the lower level is to say

"weren't you just a girl?"

Many years ago flying a military C130 around Canada - callsign "Aussie XYZ".

ATC on a quiet mid-week, mid-morning decides to impress us with his knowledge of our vernacular.

"Hey Aussie, you guys gonna roooot some sheilas when ya get home?"

Captain's stunned response "Weeeellll, we hope to while we're over here as well."

Three Bars, love it. But why oh why the "MILITARY C130" when identifying aircraft type? Are there really that many civil versions, and if so, what is the difference? Always wondered this....

Duff Man

C130 = Military
L382 = Civil

No idea of what the difference might be.

"Certification Standards"

I thought the civil Herc was a Lockheed L100 - 20 or -30, depending on model? What is the difference between an L100 and L382?

There are a number of civil Hercs in service, many in this part of the world (Indonesia and China). Southern Air Transport (ex Air America) in the USA also used to operate L100's.

Back in the days when PANAM flew the Pacific skies and I was taxiing a 737 at Guam. ATC was a US Navy female who could rattle out a clearance so fast you just sat back and blinked.

The Pan American Airways 747 pilot requested the Airways Clearance and got a mouthful back starting with "Oakland ATC clears PANAM 47630 Heavy from Agana Airport to Honolulu via 15N 160 East at flight level 310, thence climb to flight level 330 . Be at flight level 330 by time ...etc...etc...etc Read back.

This was a lengthy clearance given at machine gun speed of transmission. Long silence ensued. Then from female ATC: PANAM 47630 Heavy - you copy?

Long silence - then from Panam in a slow Texas drawl: Say, Ma'am - could you maybe run that by me again, a little slower this time - I think I've just had a pen failure....

Thanks to the pilot on QF790 (VH-VXB) today who in response to my question about the odd paint job said "this is Tellimhis Dreaming, we take it out to Alice Springs". LOL

If that's the 737 paintjob released about 2 years ago, then one skipper got a bit grumpy when a TL controller asked him if he'd left the aircraft down the backblocks of Mascot airport overnight...

Was in the circuit doing some instructing a few years back. Big flock of birds on the runway. Called up the tower and asked if the firetrucks could be sent over to scare them off.....He replied with "Just put ya head out the window..That'll scare them off"

My favourite NOTAM is for a particular airport on the Indian Sub Continent that was closed for "re-carpeting".

8/8ths of blue, wind gentle 5 knots, sun rising in the east. I turn base over one of the worlds most beautiful beaches. The "pride of the fleet" is purring like a kitten. And I can almost see the smiles on the faces of the early morning sailors down below. The day ahead is to be lots of stress free flying involving a little sitting around over meals with clients. Dam I love this job
