Mayday last night

Monitoring the scanner at 19:45 local and heard a faint call 25NE SYD on 129.7. Only the last numbers of the callsign were readable as 245 or 225 or something. A beacon signal was reported about 10mins later by some airliners as consistent & strong and others as intermittent - later located by Lifesaver 1 at UBD ref. Map10 K12 which is somewhere near the container wharves at Balmain. Nothing further until about 21:30 when a similar call on 129.7 claiming a VB flight wanted to return to YSSY. Last I heard the controllers were trying to verify its authenticity.
