Residency status of SIA pilot is revoked
The pilot singled out by Singapore's founding father Lee Kuan Yew as the leader of a revolt at the city-state's national carrier has had his residency status revoked, a local newspaper reported.
Ryan Goh, a Malaysian-born permanent resident here, is now considered an "undesirable immigrant" by the Home Affairs Ministry, the Immigrations and Checkpoints Authority was quoted by the Straits Times as saying.
Goh was part of the pilots' union that voted to remove its committee after it felt they accepted a bad deal from Singapore Airlines last year.
SIA suffered a first-ever loss of 312 million Singapore dollars (US$184 million) for its April-June quarter last year, forcing staff to accept pay cuts and retrenching more than 600 pilots, ground staff and cabin crew.
When the company rebounded with a S$306 million (US$180 million) profit in the following quarter, pilots were angry that their union had accepted a bad deal, which included a 16.5% pay cut for remaining staff.
Goh and several other pilots were called in for a meeting with Lee last month. Lee said Goh led the revolt and could afford to see the airline suffer as he had already accepted residency in Australia.
The paper said Goh has seven days to appeal.
