Pacific Blue Pay

The PB package will be about the same as the VB contract, but just in NZ dollars!

Thats about 158k to 175k kiwi for the entire skippers package (700-800 hrs) as of mid next year, so that they can take the pick of the bunch from one or two airlines in NZ.

They must be down playing the package through Rishworth at the moment so that they do not reveal their hand too soon in NZ, otherwise the operators here may try to hold on to their experienced people...

Rishworth only have about 1/2 the names they require on file now, but are understandably "quietly confident".

Pretty clever move for PB, play it down now, seriously ramp it up later, and pick up NZ 737 drivers when the others airlines least expect it.

Smart - two birds with one stone - instant experienced pilots for the shiny new airplanes, and the other 2 VBA's struggling for staff and cancelling flights in PB's recruiting wake.

Word out on the street is they are going to pay captains $90,000 NZ, no allowances, no super and four weeks leave.

I have to agree with EPIRB, I've heard the same figures/ conditions he quotes.
Not good.

Industry Ears must be the ceo of pacific blue.

Scenes reminiscent of VB startup. Come on in and help us start up and you will be looked after. Then come EBA time, sorry no deal on original statements.

Once you commit, they've got you. Don't believe the promises of better things in 12 months.

Capts $96k NZ (84K aust, 56k US, 34k GBP)

An insult to any pilot worth their salt.

Good luck getting quality aircrew and not just john wests.

Industry Ears - even if Pacific Blue pilots were going to receive that sort of money, how is that about the same as the VB contract, but just in NZ dollars?

Given that Godfrey & co have based their New Zealand offshoot on the premise that they are unable to compete with JetConnects lower costs, why would they go & pay nearly double what JetConnect are proposing to pay? As much as I'm sure it would be well appreciated within the industry, I doubt very much that it's going to happen...

Perhaps those who are thinking of joining would do well to speak to some of the more senior guys at DJ & hear what happened to all of their proposed salary increase as per their EBA - most notably, the substantial bonus/raise when DJ started flying international operations...

From a strategic point of view it would make common sense to pay more than the opposing companies – minimum 75 sectors training combined with the new to type rule, would impact on a business’ resources.

Poaching from the competitor is rife in other industries – perhaps this may be a way to wrestle back pay and conditions.

It doesn't make any sense to say that Pacific Blue are "down playing" the (real) size of the package.

They're fishing - plain and simple!
If they can attract enough recruits on the salary they're advertising now, WHY would they increase it, once they have filled the net?

As jake wrote,

This is the same animal, except that Corrigan is involved as well now, and Corrigan is all about screwing people.

Not to mention that old Jack, of Rishworth, isn't in it for the love, are you Jack? Expensive habits, lifestyle, and all that.

And remember which recruiting agency supplied Freedom Air with their pilots? (Answer - Rishworth).
Salaries? Very, very similar to that being advertised for Pathetic Blue.

Foreign Worker,

While it's unlikely that any operator in Aus/NZ will have a shortage of applicants with at least basic qualifications no matter WHAT they pay, finding applicants and keeping suitable pilots are two dirrerent things. Even in "Pay for your own endorsement" situations, the costs involved in training new crew are significant and time consuming. Even if an aspirant had to pay for all his training costs, your training system only has so much capacity and if your pilots are leaving for greener pastures, you have a catch up situation to get enough crews to keep your fleet flying.

With the number of jet operators increasing, market forces like those here in Europe are starting to take hold. For instance, to get a jobwith Ryanair, you have to start as a contracter, UNLESS you work for easyJet, in which case they will gleefully poach you! Result- easy currently can't crew their flights and are having to cross-charter.

It would be a brilliant tactic for Pacific Blue to offer a much better package and take the flood that would come from Jet Connect. It would ensure them a constant supply of experienced, current crew, at the expense of their main rival, until Jet Connect matched their conditions, costing them further.

90k NZD for a 737 Captain is ridiculous and less than rock-bottom on the (increasingly) international market.

Something had to give and I hope this is it.

Johnny the SUBSTANTIAL raise you refer to was $3000. Hardly substantial in my opinion. The Kiwis are getting over $100k a year. All the congecture is hot air. In Feb next year we will all know exactly what they are getting. Until then relax!
