RMCJ 5th November 2008 17:40

Hello.....
It was me being abit dim!!! I had already printed it off. I thought it was another document. I hadn't seen yet!! Silly me!!!!
I am really nervous about Stage one on Monday. I have been flying for 4 years both fixed wing and helicopters but I realy realy want to get into Air Traffic. I have been doing lots of aptitude tests throught my flying courses. I have my fingers crossed that they are along the same lines!
But I am in a right tiz and realy nervous. The document with all the aircraft, seats, speeds e.t.c are we meant to know this off by heart?!
Also are there any maths questions?

Any help and advice would be hugely appreciated!!!!:O:O

Bamboozle Woozle 5th November 2008 18:31

RMCJ,

Firstly - Calm Down!!! If you are that worked up you are never going to be able to concentrate on the day!

It seems like you are pretty well prepared, and having previous aviation knowledge is always useful. I would recommend learning as much of the document as you possible can, you never know what will crop up in the motivation paper, and if it doesn't, then you will know it for a later date!

I can't recall whether there were any calculations at stage 1 (anybody feel free to correct me!!!) but there is no harm is practising some s/d/t.

Just take the psychometric tests as they come, try and think clearly and work quickly AND accurately - there's no point rushing through and finshing them all if you get most of them wrong!

DON'T try to guess the answers to the personality questionaire - you will be caught out!!! Try to answer as truthfully as possible. I think in total, throughout the whole application process, you do 5 personality questionaires in various different formats and at different dates (try remembering all the answers to those!!!) AND you are likely be asked about your answers to them in your stage 3 interview should you get that far.

Take the opportunity to talk to the ATCO who is there to answer your questions. They don't bite....or so I'm told....!

And don't forget to enjoy yourself! I know its easy to say, but I have been there and I do know what it's like. Talk to the other candidates, not only will it help you to relax, but they may be able to help you out on some of that last minute aircraft recce....

Best of Luck ;):ok:

cariadmon 6th November 2008 22:06

I have a slightly strange question.

I have just filled in my expenses claim form from my stage 2 in Fareham, and was just wondering if there was any possibility that the amount claimed could have a detrimental effect on the application????

I am merely asking as it actually cost me quite a bit to get down for the interview, and it looks a bit cheeky trying to claim it all back, when I would have gladly paid double if it meant I got through.

Just a bit concerned about putting spanners in the works after getting this far!!:ouch::hmm::O:O

mrmrssoxfan 7th November 2008 00:26

I think I have seen links to math equations to work on, but now I can't seem to find the page that it is on. Does anyone have a website to recommend to me to do time/speed/distance math questions? Thanks!

Gonzo 7th November 2008 06:28

cariadmon,

Paranoid before evening joining NATS? You'll go far.......if you look at some other threads here it seems paranoia is growing!

No, it makes no difference. If you are entitled to claim the sum, and have provided receipts as required, then that's it. Although you send the claim into HR, our Finance unit handle the claim, two completely separate parts of the company....

cariadmon 7th November 2008 09:36

Paranoid? Me?

Why? Who have you been talking to? What have you been told?

:p:p

Seriously, though, I was just checking because, like a lot of people on here now, its getting down to the nitty gritty and I don't want anything to hamper the application.

Thanks for the reply, though!:ok:

BA380 8th November 2008 00:10

hey got my 1st stage tests on monday and i have been going through the shl tests online. My question is whether there will be any tests on calculations like as there is on the shl site? As it is not mentioned in the NATS handout.

One more question, where can i find more practice tests for the spatial reasoning and diagramming tests?, as the link i found in an old thread to a tiscali site doesn't seem to me anyway to work anymore.

Cheers

CV?

Hi,

I have my stage 2 this week and I'm wondering whether or not I have to take my CV with me? I've looked through this thread and can't see any mention of CVs.

Thanks :)

AJ7 10th November 2008 10:30

No need to take CV with you for stage 2... or indeed stage 3 either.

Good luck :ok:

results

Anyone who sat stage one on 3rd of nov got any results yet?

falcon737 10th November 2008 13:54

haaaaaaaaaah just came back from the S1 test.They first killed our hopes with the spatial reasoning and the diagramming wich must be done within 20 MINUTES!!!!!!!! diagramming was ok but those cubes..:hmm::mad: the rest was ok speacially the one about the motiv. paper i think they only asked 2 questions about the aircraft 1 was the cruising speed of A310 and the other about best route for A777 no seating quest. :ok: no begans 2 loooong weeks for either :{ OR :O.Do they select those with highest mark or do they have a minima and everybody above it will be selected.
Hope the best for all

GhostUK 10th November 2008 14:28

Scary stuff...

I've got about 2 weeks until my stage 1.
I think I'll be ok with spatial reasoning and the diagramming.

Hopefully I can memorize the rest of the lit before then... there sure is alot thru.

Was there any other questions, test they asked you?
Mathimatical etc?

GhostUK 10th November 2008 15:17

Whats are the 'shl tests'? Do they relate to the Nats test?

falcon737 10th November 2008 16:02

all the tests is from SHL but taken by nats and yes they are the same (diagramming,spatial) but on my opinion it was more complicated but dont worry if u now how to do it fast and correct then u will come out of the room without the need for toilet:p

AJ7 10th November 2008 17:30

Do they select those with highest mark or do they have a minima and everybody above it will be selected.
There is a minimum bar, and all those who score at or above that score will be invited to the next stage. Could be few or could be all, you dont compete against anybody only the standard required. And that applies at all stages throughout both the recruitment and training process...

3rd Nov London results

Hi

I took my stage one in London on the 3rd Nov. Is there anybody here who was there and already got the results? Yghhhh, nerves are eating me :sad:

coffee77 11th November 2008 07:08

Hi no. 9

I just noticed your post, I did it and no results so far. Let me know if you hear anything :}

Tom g 11th November 2008 08:49

I did my Stage 1 Yesterday afternoon in London
I think it went well, i agree with falcon the cubes were the hardest but i found the diagramming far easier and felt good about the rest of it.

Thanks for everyones contributions so far its been a huge help!
Roll on 15 days.

T

Maiya 11th November 2008 13:23

Thanks AJ7 :)

I'm so nervous - I've read through this thread and found it to be extremely helpful, and I've learnt the document thoroughly, it's the computer tests and interview that are bringing me out in a cold sweat! :\

ar_ni 11th November 2008 22:47

You read all over the place that you're not meant to finish the tests- there just isn't enough time. I think I only did 3/4 of both the cubes and diagramming and got through ok, so don't get too worried.

Hope you don't have too long a wait- I had 10 days for stage one and it was horrible!

Abi

ar_ni 11th November 2008 23:17

I don't think the cruising speed thing will have required the conversion- the answers surely weren't all that similar since the conversion is very small (1=1.15 or something)? It's also written somewhere that speed is measured in knots but referred to as MPH (I'm sure someone can correct me...).

I finished the motivation paper and was fairly happy with it (I've read the pass mark is 70%). Didn't finish any of the aptitude tests. I noticed the bloke next to me was filling in the blanks randomly when we got to the last 20 seconds... I thought that was a bit mad but apparently you're not marked down...

Don't worry, worrying one!

ar_ni 11th November 2008 23:42

I think that's just the motivation paper- think it must be lower on the aptitude tests. If she finished all the cubes she's superwoman. :}

Good luck, let us know how you do!

Bamboozle Woozle 12th November 2008 06:28

I just want to know if I'm in!
thegolfpimp - Whoa, calm down!!! Worrying about whether you have passed the stage 1 tests or not is not going to make you find out the results any quicker! If you tried your best and put your all into it, then thats the most that you can do. Relax!

This is only the very first stage of a verrrrrrrrry long selection process; subject to you being successful (which I'm sure you will:ok:) you have the joys of the online personality questionaire.....the application form.......stage two with the lovely computer tests......stage three with those scary interviewers(;))......in all it can take up to about 5 months JUST to do the interview process.....then you have to wait for a college date.....medicals....then to ACTUALLY start - you really do have to have the patience of a saint!

If it helps, when I did my stage 1 (from what I can recall, it was back in March!) I only just made it on to the third page for the cube exercise (the net that was a real :mad: to try and fold together in your head!) when they told us to stop - we all came out of the room shaking our heads thinking we had failed that one!:{

...but I couldn't have done that badly, as I start down in sunny Bournemouth in January....:}

Best of Luck, but take some chill pills!:ok:

Oh, and is it just me, or does there seem to be some mass hysteria regarding the stage 1 on here??!!:}

angry_muppet 12th November 2008 07:31

There seems to be a little bit of mass hysteria... :)

Keep a cool head and everything is going to be fine! Regarding completing all the tests in the time allotted; my own opinion is that practice makes perfect. I've did about 8 different aptitude based selection processes and NATS is by far the hardest, but I still managed to complete all the tests in the time given. If there's one in particular bugging you, skip it and move on. It's better to do three others and get them right than sit on one that you're not sure about.

I have heard (can't comment on the truth of it though) that it's not how many you do, but how many you get correct of the questions completed... Truth or not?

Obviously, do one, get one right = 100%, but they're not going to accept you! :}

JonG 12th November 2008 10:42

knots is nautical miles per hour. That's what they would have wanted the answer in. There's no need for any conversion from knots to standard miles.

GhostUK 12th November 2008 12:09

Hi guys,

I'm currently getting ready for my Stage 1.
I'm already going thru the motivation paper, aswell as the boxes and diagrams. I have about 2 weeks until the test, so fingers crossed should be ample time for prep.

Could someone please give me some examples of the types of math I should brush up on? (Keeping in mind its been a good few years since my last math exam).

Any help, advice given will be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

GhostUK

AJ7 12th November 2008 12:21

GhostUk

Prepare using all the combinations of distance, speed and time. e.g...

If a/c flies at 420kts for 40 mins how far will it travel?
If a/c flies 60 miles in 10 mins how fast is it moving?
If point A and point B are 50 miles apart and a/c is doing 200kts how long will it take?

Get used to interchanging the three quantities as much as you can, and get good with multiples of 6 and 60 :ok:

GhostUK 12th November 2008 13:25

Thanks AJ7

Gonzo 12th November 2008 15:21

BW,

stage three with those scary interviewers(http://static.pprune.org/images/smilies/wink2.gif)
There are only a few very scary ones, you'll make everyone else nervous! :E

but I couldn't have done that badly, as I start down in sunny Bournemouth in January....:}
Errr, not quite.

Have you ever been to 'sunny' (sic) Bournemouth in January??? :}

AJ7 12th November 2008 16:01

I have.

It wasn't sunny.

Still...

ctb_184 14th November 2008 12:43

See after your stage 3 NATS say you should hear from them within 15 days?

Is that 15 days or 15 working days? And is it by email as per usual?

Waiting in anticipation :\:{

ctb_184 14th November 2008 13:05

Is right, its 15 working days, aaaaaaaaaargh :ugh::\

Bamboozle Woozle 14th November 2008 16:10

They're usually pretty good in HR and you will find out in a couple of days. The gen for me was an email telling me I had passed followed by a telephone call to confirm it all, although I know of people who have had a telephone call before the email when they have passed.

Best of Luck :ok:

watch_the_birdie 14th November 2008 17:02

I got a call the day after my stage 3 saying yes.

On my stage 2 I got a call on the train going home from it.

coffee77 15th November 2008 00:10

Hi

And that makes me worried - I mean how quick you got your replies. It has been two weeks since my stage 1. Or maybe it takes them longer to check materials from stage 1 than from 2 and 3? Or maybe not... Eghhh

watch_the_birdie 15th November 2008 09:36

Chill, stage 1 took me 14 days to hear.

Put it this way - there were like 60 at my stage 1 session, 4 at my stage 2, 3 at my stage 3.

You do the maths.

Bamboozle Woozle 15th November 2008 09:58

Yep, the full 15 days for me to find out after stage 1. As Watch The Birdie says, there are a lot more people and a lot more test material to get through for stage 1 compared to stage 2 & 3. On Stage 3, the interviewers actually decide there and then whether you have passed - they just keep you hanging on for a while...!:E

GhostUK 15th November 2008 15:05

Sorry if this is a little off topic. But I've just been trying to brush up on my maths using the example questions posted above.

I'm getting a slight variation between my results on paper and the one I get from the calculator.

Question: If a/c flies 764 miles in 78 mins how fast is it moving?

S=D/t

So the equation I'd use is

S = (764 / 78) x 60 (to convert the minutes to hours).

The result I got from long division is 578MPH...
However using a calculator, the answer I got was more like 587MPH..

I've noticed this problem with pretty much any equation I do using long division.. The answer is always slightly different to that of the calculator mainly after the decimal point. Before the x60 conversion, the decimal I had from long division (764 / 78 = 9.62) but the calculator's answer was more like 9.79.. which seems to make all the diffrence. No matter what I do, I cant seem to replicate this answer using simple long division.

Am I doing this all wrong? Or do they have a range of answers they accept?
