Leeds Radar
The primary radar is NOTAMed as unserviceable until tomorrow afternoon (Friday 26th). I've noticed it hasn't been turning a few times this week. Does anyone know if the shutdowns are for routine maintenance or if something unscheduled has cropped up which requires attention ?
Makes me wonder as this particular radar (Watchman) was installed in late 1989. That is quite long in the tooth in my opinion. Quite a few UK airports with similar-age legacy radars have now replaced them with the likes of the Selex and Raytheon machines, although I know the Manchester Watchman has a bit of time left yet. Perhaps the Leeds Watchman is beginning to show its age. I don't know really, just asking. |
Cor, I wonder how much they want for it!
It's a baby compared to ours! |
Is legacy management yukspeak for old?

Sheds,
Yes it is apparently. It is management yukspeak for a successful and reliable enterprise. Some oik jumped down my throat a few months ago on the spotters' forum when I asked what a 'legacy-airline' was. The Forth Bridge, Eiffel Tower and The Houses Of Parliament are legacy structures. The Bank Of England and Lloyds Of London are legacy institutions. And so on and so forth....:E |
Does that make an old Lexus a Legacy Legacy?
|
Wot you mean a Subaru Legacy? Anyone still got an AR1 or AR15 in use? I'm sure talkdownman would like one of those even if he can't have the Leeds Watchman.

Manchester have just had a new Raytheon installed which is still being commissioned. Maybe EGCC can sell their Watchman to EGNM. Cheap obviously! ;) |
They would probably have difficulty understanding it at Yeadon as it is a Lancastrian Radar and Yeadon is in Yorkshire :E

and it's a different coloured pansy sorry rose.

Meanwhile...'this approach may be affected by using legacy radar. Missed approach instructions will be passed in good time...'

Legacy is a word that has admittedly crept into my vocabulary recently. I suppose it is just a fancy word for 'old'.
I'm not trying to suggest the LBA Watchman is past it or in any way no longer suitable. However, when I consider the number of British airports that have received new radars (and fancy control towers) in recent years I can't help thinking, when will it be our turn ? |
Probably when they reinstate the old, mainly into the prevailing wind, runway.
|
Fat chance. The old RW28 threshold is now stand 20. They extended the wrong runway back in 84 but that's a different story. Would be nice to see a new shiny, stripy Selex or Raytheon gracing the concrete and cabbage patch but I think Bridgepoint's money is going elsewhere for now. I love our old, distinctive control tower but I dare say there will come a time when it will have to be replaced. Still if it lasts as long as Heathrow's LEGACY tower it will have done well ;).
