Interesting article in UK daily mail 24/08/06 comparing salaries of various proffessions in the UK. ATCOs came in 18th although I would think that most NATS ATCOs and many non state are well above the average that they quote.

I see what theyve done. It appears as though theyve listed the salary as that of a recently validated ATCO and the salary of a pilot as that of a captain. I know a few flight officers for various airlines who earn no where near the amount listed in that scale.

No you've missed the point. The earnings figures are averages. Therfore it is a balance between newly qualified ATPL flying twotters or sheds etc earning a pittance and BA senior captains earning squillions. Similarly, as I know from personal experience, the average between a non state TWR ATCO earning maybe 18-20k and a NATS en-route WM earning more in the region of 80k. Some winners, some losers but 18th from 300 professions given the relatively modest entry quals isn't all that bad. I never even finished my A levels, but am earning 5 times what I earnt in the RAF as an assistant with a few scale points still to come. One of my best friends however completed a degree, qualified as an accountant and earns 25k less than me whilst having to live in the south of England.

NATS ATCO 1 at Band 5 unit +/- £90k including shift pay. All this before tax. Watch Supervisors the same, with the addition of a car allowance or company car.

Am I right in saying that ATCO 2 is the normal scale for an ATC, be it Area or Approach, Band 1 or 5? What moves you to ATCO 1, and is there much difference in pay?

I know you didn't ask about this part of the world but for anyone interested in the UAE ACC, the tax free annual salary is on todays exchange rate $144,000 Ozzie = $107,800 USD. Yes you will pay about $20,000 USD of that out to rent a 3 bedroom flat or about $30,000 plus to rent a villa, but still very good money compared to Oz.

(and I am guessing ****su Tonka when you say basic tax that is Income tax only and doesn't include GST, medicare levies, stamp duty, state sales tax on fuel, cigarettes and grog etc etc. Typing that reminds me why I left)

Very rough figures ( old figures ) but there are many allowances that are automatically paid as a Eurocontrol Salary. It comes down to your personal circumstances eg. Married / Married plus kids / Dutch National or Non Dutch National etc.

But here goes. Lets say you are 10 years checked out/ Non Dutch National/ Married + 1 Child..Note : This is a Net figure ( wouldn't have a clue what is paid in tax..everything is quoted in net salaries )

Monthly Salary = 8000 - 8500 Euro ..( This includes the above allowances plus also shift allowance ( average is around 900 -1000 Euro),( Supervisors will be around 9500 - 10000 Euro).

Eurocontrol will shortly go to a composite salary which will enhance this total.

Yearly Total ( on 8000 p.m ) = 96,000 Euro after tax , 120,468 $U.S after tax & 161,765 $A after tax

Some HK numbers for you based on this morning's exchange rate (AUD=5.79 HKD). Taken a bit of a beating over the last 4 years with 3 pay cuts. :mad:

Most expats on top of ATCO II : Salary AUD156,000 p.a. + Accomm Allow AUD48,000 p.a + 25% Gratuity every 3 years approx AUD117,000.

Top tax rate is 20% with max overall = 16% flat. Accom allow taxed slightly differently. Normal tax bill with spouse rebate is about AUD30,000 p.a. with gratuity spread over 3 years.

HK are not taking expats at the moment.They have a localisation policy so are taking on lots of Chinese kids.Might change sometime but depends if the CAD can convince the Civil Service that there is a need to hire expats.You'll no doubt hear it here first.;)

Anyone working at eurocontrol that can tell me how much of the salaray that will go away in tax? Not working at eurocontrol is also ok :rolleyes:

I know of a couple of people of to UAE. £70k tax free, House and maid, 5(?) flights to UK per year. £100k may be correct or certainly in the right ballpark.

However......

No Pension, You do not own the house, No medical cover unless you pay etc etc.......

So it has its good and bad points :)

The salaries I quoted are after tax has been taken out...there is no way you can avoid this even if you are a Dutch National..there are no deductions ( as far as I am aware ) that you can make to reduce your tax thereby increasing your pre-tax income.

One other thing I forgot to mention is that out of your salary you have deducted a sickness insurance premium ( I took this into account when listing the salary ) which covers 80% minimum of medical bills ( in the case of hospital 100%) & also you will be covered for up to 10,000 Euro per child for Educational expenses. Additionally you will be paid to return to your point of recruitment via 1st Class Train fare or Business Class Airfares ( once per year ).
