Just been listening in to Manchester Tower Controller on 06L

a very high usage of the single runway operation

Well done mate

I'm still puzzled why MAN is the only place I know that has a runway that shuts for lunch!

EGCC ATC

I operated from Manchester for almost 20 years, before finally calling it a day recently. At all times I found the standard of ATC there to be very professional indeed, helpful and understanding at all levels. Many thanks.
Regarding the r/w closure for lunch. This rather reminds me of what used to happen often at RAF airfields with the old GCA. The GCA always seemed to be `off` for maintenance, whether any was actually needed or not, only when the RVR was less than 200m in freezing fog!

There's nothing strange about closing it at lunchtime, all airfields have noise abatement proceedures. Heathrow can swap runways at regular intervals, Manchester can't do this due to the un-useful position of their new strip of tarmac! So their only choice is to close it for a while. Personally I couldn't care less about lunchtimes but a PIA approach to 06R at 0800 on a Sunday . You get the picture!

ManAgp.
Scheduled hours of operation are 0600-1200, 1500-2100 local Mon-Fri. 0630-1200, 1500-2100 ,local Sat & Sun. The hours can be varied to a small degree by joint agreement between MAN airfeld ops and the ATC tower supervisor to allow either slightly later/earlier closing. Most common cause of variation would be to accommodate an emergency. Sunday around 1415 local being a case to point. The way the movements are growing, particularly in the luchtime period there could be a rethink, but it's going to need alot of lead-time to get the staffing arranged.
