Question Irs

Can anyone enlighten me as to how the IRS works for flights over the atlantic.

I have an interview with NATS on 22nd and have been to ScOACC Prestwick and the guy who showed us around said that
we may get asked questions about transatlantic operations as we had visited the oceanic centre.

Anyway i understand that transatlantic flights use the IRS for navigation and a datalink for comms with oceanic control. But what is the IRS and how does it work if it is independant of both ground based and satellite nav systems.

Can anyone in this forum help or should i ask in one of the driver forums?

SR562 - you may do better on the 'Tech Log' forum, where your 'q' may indeed have already been answered (try 'search').

You may also wish to search for an excellent thread posted here by 'Northern Sky' (RIP!) entitled 'FMC questions' or something similar which may be of use to you?
