Working in Spain and leaving UK

As a disgruntled UK ATCO looking for a change in direction I was wondering if anyone has any info on working in Spain?

Tried a web search and found zilch.

It is important to point out, that I am not just looking for the greener grass of the other side, but I want to make changes in the quality of my family's life.

If anyone has personal experience of jumping off the UK ship to anywhere I would be grateful to hear, as at this point I am considering all options......including the biggest one, whether I can uproot the children and wife at all.

I have checked out the websites of NavCanda and Air Services Australia, but neither seemed to yield much info.

ASA is recruiting as well, although it doesn't look like the got the hang of it yet, how to provide potential candidates with a reasonable package. (Trainee's pay at the college, then starting at the bottom of the pay scale, no matter what your experience is. Not good enough! Plus you need to have at least permanent residence when you apply, catch22!)

Actually no contract made for foreing ATC is Spain, althoug lack of staff is becoming extremely critical. As a member of EU you can apply to enter ATC School when exams are held (once a year). Average 250 places for around 7000 applicants, and as zerouali says, if you canīt read the AENA link, better desist, as Spanish language is compulsory.

Hi expeditedescent,

Whilst not strictly Spain, you could have a look at Gibraltar. You get the best of both worlds there, cheap living, access to a few home comforts via the "Safeway superstore" and just across the border there's the whole of Spain. That Southern bit of Spain is pretty underdeveloped, especially towards Tarifa, in comparison to further North on the "Costas". I spent a very enjoyable couple of years there, living in Spain and working in Gib. Serco have the contract. e-mail me privately if you want more info.

Moving abroad

As has already been said Serco are always looking for people in the Middle East.
Dubai is the place to be for quality of life and job satisfaction. There are opportunities there for the wife to work and schooling is pretty good with some schools following the British curriculum.
But don`t be fooled into thinking it`s all beach, pool and fun. It`s not paradise but very different to the UK. Some people love it and spend the rest of their careers there, some hate it. You find you slip into the "expat lifestyle " very quickly, ie being lazy, racist and having everything done for you. If you want more info on there e-mail me.
As for NavCanada, isn`t it the same as Oz, you need to be a landed immigrant to get a job offer and a job offer almost ensures landed immigrant status. A chicken and egg situation. Having said that people have done it so I guess it`s possible. Just be prepared for a long drawn out process.
As for Gib...no traffic, high tax and nothingto do. Or so I`ve been told.

The difference between NavCanada and ASA is, that you don't need to hold a canadien residence permit at the time of application. In fact, if you get a job offered, this will significantly contribute to your points total.
To be elligible for application with ASA, you need to have a residence permit at the time of application.

Proceed as Cleared is correcton all counts. In Canada, you can get a letter of offer sans being a resident. You have to be a landed immigrant to actually start work. You attach the letter of offer to the visa application and start practising "O' Canada" (and reading up on the rules of Ice Hockey) and learning the achievements of Maurice Richard and Bobby Orr (everybody knows who Gretzky is).

Its unrealistic to advise people NOT to take lucrative jobs overseas because a select few screwed up the matrimonial selection process before walking down the aisle. A lot of wives and children are enthusiastic about moving to foreign lands (and enjoy them to the hilt once there).

If your friend's wife won't get out of the house to work or socialise and the kids are "screamers" your friend has problems regardless of where he lives....SEND HER HOME TO MOTHER!!

Spain

I have been told that AENA are recruiting at the moment. I know of one US controller who works or worked at Seville centre. Dead right about Gib - no traffic, relatively high tax - but with some benefits. Living in Spain distinctly possible but sadly, NO vacancies currently. Trust me, wives don't always like it here. But there's always the pedestrian traffic crossing the runway to make the day more interesting...............
