Exclamation ATN CPDLC mandated in EU as of tomorrow 5.Feb 2020

The intent of the condition in Article 3 (3) of Regulation 29/2009 is indeed to exempt the aircraft with a first CofA issued (for that aircraft serial number) prior to 1 January 2018, and equipped prior to this date with FANS-1/A.

A330 Series 200/300 can also benefit from a CPDLC equipage exemption as an aircraft type/model in accordance with Decision 2019/2012.

If the operator/aircraft satisfies one of the criteria listed in Article 3 (3) of the Regulation (EC) No 29/2009, or if the aircraft type/model is exempted in accordance with relevant provisions in the EC Implementing Decision 2019/2012, the operator’s aircraft can benefit from the data link equipage exemption.

Consolidated version of Regulation (EC) No 29/2009

EC Implementing Decision 2019/2012:

The operator does not need to notify EASA of the aircraft CPDLC/datalink exempted under the Regulation (EC) No 29/2009. However EASA recommends the operators to notify their National Authority.
EASA plans to issue shortly an SIB (Safety Information Bulletin) to recommend the operators to indicate their CPDLC/datalink exemption status in their flight plan.
The SIB will recommend for operators:

Operators conducting flights wholly or partly in the Single European Sky airspace where ATN B1 CPDLC is required, but for which Commission Regulation (EC) 29/2009 is not applicable in accordance with Article 3(3) or the aircraft types/models are exempt by Commission Implementing Decision 2019/2012, should include the letter “Z” in item 10 and the indicator “DAT/CPDLCX” in item 18 of each flight plan.

So how are you finding it? Much changed? Nice to see Ryanair finally using it but mandatory or not, it still isn't the current future! Had any routing issues?

Had a weird experience the other day. CPDLC worked with every center except Maastricht, despite trying quite a few times we could not log on to EDYY on several flights, no problem with other centers at all. Unlike normally, we did not get a bollocking on frequency for not logging on though.

Lightbulb

Due to high abort rates, was some 7 years ago a so called LOG On list established
by MUAC (EDYY), and Skyguide in CH filtering on better avionics See also:

https://ext.eurocontrol.int/WikiLink...php/Logon_List

You flew probably with bad performing (back listed) avionics,
generating 4-5 times higher failure rate.

ATCO do see it and did not insist of the LOG ON requirements.
cheers

You'll never get a 'bollocking' from Maastricht. We use it when we feel the need, quiet or busy. When it's quiet, we'll use it for most things but when it's busy, only for frequency transfer. (most cases). There is a directive that we're obliged to ask you to 'log on' as first sector.
