If you consider replacing voice with CPDLC indeed this statement is correct. As indeed CPDLC is not meant for time critical communications. Therefor you would either send the message earlier/have a bigger buffer/wait longer.
However CPDLC is not to replace voice, it is a secondary means of communication.
There are many messages that can be send to offload the frequency. Either by pilot or controller. And indeed we do have the luxury of 2 sometimes 3 ATCO's on a sector. But even while talking to one aircraft I can send multiple CPDLC messages to other aircraft at the same time.
This is also due to the way the system is set up for us. We have the luxury of being able to change the system in-house and have a relatively short time between a change request and a system update.

If you ever are in Europe please drop by Maastricht would love to show you how we use it to our benefit. You might even get some of our old Ozzy colleagues to join you.

GOLD is indeed very comprehensive, we are looking to upgrade to PLATINUM ;-)

I have absolutely no idea who's equipment is within the system, I just have an interface that gives me the choice for some aircraft of how to enter it. Where and how the CPDLC messages are sent/received are someone else's head scratcher.

Thanks, I'd like that. I'm trying to influence cultures where all comms with a given flight are either by CPDLC or voice, rather than a combo.

parishiltons, in my Centre that is impossible as when they check in on frequency they may not be either logged on yet or at the correct flight level whereby CPDLC is permissable, and there are too many instantaneous instructions to every aircraft to permit soul use of CPDLC. For departures I will only use voice until they are about transfer point and then CPDLC may come into effect, but it is near on impossible to just use CPDLC for an entire transit of any flight through any of my sectors.

Hope to see you one day at Maastricht.

For us it will, for the foreseeable future, be a combo. However the winnings we have already are more than welcome.

Beside that the response time (specially with FANS1/A) can be at times too long.

CPDLC in France

Guys,

I would like to ask for some assistance please.

I am associated with a couple of business jets fitted with Garmin 3000 and I believe FANS 1/A VDL Mode 2 CPDLC. However these aircraft can log on to CPDLC across Europe except France.

Could you please suggest why you think the aircraft can not log on in France?

Thank you

MM
