EGGW OLNEY 1B - Question for ATC types
Greetings.
It had been a while since I was in EGGW and my partner in crime and I have a question for the ATC types here.
We were assigned the OLNEY 1B. Briefed it. Took off. Just about to join the Bovingdon 345 degree radial, we received a clearance to "climb to FL70". As we discussed wether or not the ensuing alttitude restrictions still applied, we were given a heading. Since we were given the heading the altitude restrictions no longer applied. However, I am still curious. In the US, the clearance to climb to 7000 (FL70) would have negated the altitude restrictions on the SID. Does this hold true in the UK, or is there verbiage to indicate we would be free of (or held to) restrictions.

I'm a pilot not an ATCO and I am not 100% sure but I remember having this discussion a while ago and I believe the outcome was that it DOES negate the SID altitude restrictions. I believe some controllers try to remove the ambiguity by always saying "Climb NOW FL70" but I believe "Climb FL70" has the same meaning.

Phraseology
You are quite correct in that being given the climb instruction, above the SID level, the SID altitude restrictions are then lifted.
The phraseology changed a while back and when being given a climb above the SID level the phraseology should always be "climb NOW FLXXX".
