Printable Flight Progress Strips
On a Visit ATC session at Farnborough last year one of the ATCOs gave a very memorable hands-on demo of filling in a Flight Progress Strip. He did this by getting all us visiting private pilots to try and fill one out. First with him playing the Private Pilot and doing what will no doubt be painfully familiar to you folks, by way of information in the wrong order, interspersed with Umms and Arrs. He then went through the call in the right order and we all managed to make a half-decent fist of filling in the strip. It was a real eye opener to all the assembled Private Pilots.
I know quite a few Private Pilots who are nervous about talking to ATC, to the point of going non-radio at times when some contact would be mutually beneficial. As a Class Rating Instructor I conduct Instructional Hour training flights for some of the local pilots and would like to include the FPS exercise in the briefing.
I wonder if anyone could point me in the direction of an FPS that I could down-load and print out. Preferably in the format used by Farnborough LARS and other units in the South East. I have tried various searches on the Internet, but most of the ones I’ve come across are American and the UK ones don’t look much like the ones I recall from the Farnborough visit.
Thanks for your time.

If you open this :
www.caa.co.uk/cap493
& go to Appendix D, there are coloured pics of the various FPS's recommended although not all units use them like this.

whiskey-kilo-wanderer,
It may also be worth talking to the Air traffic Service Unit at your local airfield to understand the FPS format that they use and the information which they require. For various reasons airfields can require none, some or all of the following:-
Captain's name
Fuel endurance
Area of operation
Duration of flight
etc.
In addition to passing information in the format described in CAP413 it also makes sense to readback in the order that information is transmitted by the ATCO/FISO since he/she will have a natural flow in annotating an FPS which most likely follows the order in which they transmit information.

Thanks for the replies.
Combining the Transiting Flight from ETC’s suggested CAP493 along with the Shoreham’s Over-flight format I’ve got something I can use to get people thinking about the person on the other end of the radio.
Part of the problem is that most of the people I fly with for the instructional hour are operating from farm strips. Safetycom is about as far as most of them feel comfortable, possibly A/G at Headcorn where they get to see the guy on the radio when they go in to pay the landing fee. Farnborough LARS covers the area and some of the more advanced ones will talk to London Info to open flight plans etc. It’s a case of getting them to feel comfortable and confident to talk to ATC. As mentioned above, I think the Visit ATC days is one of the best initiatives that has come along in recent years.
