Striking ATCOs: Governments Must Act!

I was about to post here, but I think a new thread would be better.

From the union's flyers I've read, it seems the big deal in Germany is overtime and all the problems this induces : overstress and fatigue, understaffing on a medium or long term. Thus safety and/or delays in the balance.

From a strategic point of view, I reckon negotiating pay improvement at the same time was a mistake from the German union, in the current financial and social background : too easy for management and journos to break your image.

Accept money as a counterpart for overtime is a mistake (in ATC). As we can see in Spain...

Umm, BrATCO, if you read it carefully you might notice that the union didn't want to barter overtime for money. That was what the management wanted as a compensation for better pay and which was refused by the union. However, working conditions are not part of the current round of negotiations, it is about pay, seniority, qualification requirements for certain positions and so on.

By the way, there is absolutely no better time for higher pay than this year. Germany faces a real shortage of skilled professionals in many professions, unemployment is at a 25 year low and economic growth is the highest for more than 10 years, yes it is even substantially higher on a higher level than prior to the credit crunch.

It is only comparable to the spanish problem in one point: the company didn't hire enough ATCO trainees, especially after 9/11 and now there is a very real staff shortage in certain sectors, especially in the western part of germany. The rest really isn't.

I stand corrected. The flyers I read were summaries in French...

In this case, no mistake from the union, just a blatant trap from management.

Mediator will give his conclusion to both parties today. Dfs and Gdf haven until 16.09 to agree or not, until then both prties should keep silent. If both parties are requesting it, same mediator can continue 4 more weeks.
If one refuses, them mediator will deliver his verdict on 16.09 ( or earlier)

Industrial action if any can only take place after that.
