ATC Issues

Hey Everyone,

I am writing a paper on communication or the lack there of in aviation. If anybody has any input about experiences communicating to or from ATC to other pilots etc please tell your story below. I need to show the issues that result in mis-communication and what should be done to help resolve issues. Any help would be great!

Jason

Tell you what, Jason, why don't you start by telling us something about yourself and we'll follow.

NATS in the UK sponsor a 'Communication Errrors Working Group' so why not contact them.

Jason,

Well done. Your post elicits the very thing you seek. As On The Beach alludes to, give a little, get a little.

Do you reckon they called the 'Saw' films saw so that people would say:
"Did you see saw?"
"Yeah I saw Saw."
"Did you see Saw 2?"
"I saw Saw 2 too"
"Did you see Saw 3?"
"No but I saw Saw 4"
"What did you see Saw 4 before you saw Saw 3 for?"

@ Lon More,

Many ATC comms issues are parodied in the above exchange.

Two/to/too.
four/for.

Vagaries of the English language. I've seen misunderstandings. It might have been drawing a bit of a long bow to say "many", but I've seen (or heard) a few.

Aside from that it's mildly humorous. To me, anyway.

"Bring reinforcements, we're going to advance" / "Bring three and fourpence, we're going to a dance"

"Tickle your arse with a feather" / "Particularly nasty weather"

"Cheer Up" / "Gear Up"

I am a student pilot going to school to get a degree in aviation. I have been flying for a year or so now and I am the biggest problem in communication when I talk to ATC. I happen to fly out of an airport in Class B airspace so unless I want to fly in some small corridor the entire time, I have to get clearance from ATC. One of the first times I talked to ATC to request clearance into airspace to that I could land at my airport I said, (Sundowner 5198 mike requesting to fly into memphis airspace then land at M01." The ATC came back and asked if I was a student and then helped me out, luckly the big jets were not taking up ATC's time or they would probably have been upset. Listening to air traffic between the professionals and GA pilots had me thinking about how communication can be tricky with the best intentions. Now that I have to write a paper for my safety class, this is the topic I chose. As I mentioned in another forum, I am not out to make anybody look bad, Pilots or ATC. Its a paper about how communication is very important and can cause disasters if not taken seriously.

Then, there was that American cargo aircraft from Memphis on the ramp that called "Four burning and turning, ready for the push". To which a Speedbird passing behind replied "Actually, old chap, you have five burning and turning, as you so quaintly call it, because your APU's on fire".

Gotta love the "septics".

Jason, why don't you arrange a visit to your local tower, and then you can talk to the folks working there and see for yourself.
