Hi there,
Could have been for any number of reasons... descent through other traffic, fit you in the sequence, a problem with something just to the west of Lam (Eg overflying traffic at the same level) the controller fancied seeing if you could do it, Emergency traffic in the way nearby and if you entered the hold at the normal position it might delay it...
...and plenty more. Almost certainly just a controller using his/her nouse and getting the job done in the most safe, orderley, expeditious and therefore effective manner.
Have you been to TC? We love to see pilots, then they can ask questions like this and we can show you what we're seeing and tell you why we do stuff...
Cheers,
Northerner

There were lot's of us (well more than 1 or 2) all asked to hold 5 nm short. Coupled with a non standard director frequency (127.525?) it made exiting the the hold and being handed over more complicated than the normal "back to LAM, leave 265 at 220 and director 120.4". Lots of wrong readbacks and corrections needed. Just curious and wondered what the reason was. Thanks
