LHR transition altitude : when to switch from QNH to 29.92" / 1013 mb

On the SID charts, transition altitude is published as 6000 ft.

If climbing through 3000 ft. and cleared to FL 100, is the switch from QNH to 29.92 in / 1013 mb made at that moment
or
climbing through 6000 ft. ?

If subsequently told to stop climb at 5000 ft., I presume you must reset QNH ?

Got a link to the procedure ?

As soon as you are cleared to a flight level you change to 1013mb. If you are subsequently told to stop at an altitude, you reset the QNH.

When cleared from an altitude to a flight level, do not wait until you pass the transition altitude before changing to 1013mb. It's asking for trouble.

UK AIP:

5.1.4
Within Controlled Airspace a pilot should set one altimeter to the latest Aerodrome QNH prior to take-off. While flying at, or below, the Transition Altitude vertical position will be expressed in terms of altitude based upon the Aerodrome QNH. When cleared for climb to a Flight Level, vertical position will be expressed in terms of Flight Level, unless intermediate altitude reports have been specifically requested by Air Traffic Control.

It is good practice to set one on 1013 and the other on QNH if you have two alimeters .

As BOAC and Talkdownman both say, the answer for the UK is in the UK AIP at ENR 1.7 - ALTIMETER SETTING PROCEDURES, paras 5 in particular.

This subject comes up regularly - you could try reading here and here for a start ...

ab33t,

Please tell me that you weren't seriously endorsing one of the most stupid suggestions that I have ever heard.

We never fly around with two different subscale settings on the main altimeters. We leave the standby on the QNH until we enter RVSM airspace and then that is set to standard aswell.

You are an altitude bust waiting to happen.

Tick tock...

CM - the post was "if you have two alimeters" - not three. One main, one standby maybe?
