Number of UK controllers

Just curiosity, how many atcos are you in NATS?
Because there are more ANSP in the Uk, such as serco?
And what's the total amount of controllers in the UK?
In Spain more or less about 2400, but not all of them dealing with traffic, I mean not in the front line.
Thanks in advance!!

In March I emailed the CAA to ask that very question; purely out of interest as someone in power was heard to say "controllers are 10 a penny".

There are 2400 licenced air traffic controllers in the UK (this figure does not include flight information service offices or air ground operators. I imagine with retirement rates and validation rates, that number is probably still the same.

Short of asking each individual ANSP I don't know if there is a way of finding out each of their figures.

The ones I can remember are;

NATS
SERCO
Marshalls
Peel
Highlands and Islands
then you have the airports themselves.

Hope this helps.

Don't know if this helps with your statistics, but.....
According to a newspaper article that was emailed to 'Baton Rouge' today:-
After 23rd January, there will only be a "skeleton staff" at Manchester.
"THEM BONES, THEM BONES, THEM DRY BONES!!
- Saturday, a good day for "burying bad news".

There are something like 99 ANSPs in the UK (counting each airport which provides in-house ATC), or 98 (if you discount Coventry).
NATS employs about 1900 of the ATCOs licensed by the CAA.

out of interest do HIAL,Peel,MAG etc hold a different ANSP licence for each unit or is it a company wide one like nats. if it is then why?

surely HIAL would be able to provide a service to sumburgh wick and kirkwall on one licence if nats can provide for heathrow aberdeen and city on just one.

Places like MAG, HIAL and Peel I presume would have have a collective ANSP but with local differences to their MATS pt 2 and Aerodrome Manuals to suit. I know that Peel have a Group ATS Manager and MAG do too. I can only presume that HIAL, being longer established as a group, would have had this set up already but I am open to correction.

Coventry ATC are Marshall Aerospace of Cambridge employees which at least gave them a little protection with the Coventry debacle.

If you count three months pay in lieu of notice as such, then I suppose they've done marginally better than everyone else at Coventry, other than that, the March 2010 mortgage payment still needs to be met...

To answer #6; each individual unit has to have its own CAA Licence.

Don't forget the military. They may not have a yellow book but the control a noticeable proportion of the traffic that floats around the UK.

For the record MAG is a certified ANS provider, designated to provide ANS at Bournemouth, East Midlands and Humberside. I believe Peel is similarly certified, and designated to provide services it the airports it operates. I would expect that HIAL operates under a similar arrangement.
