Great info here thanks all, I'm currently in the same position as Gemmy having to pick between the 2. Had always had my heart set on tower but really dont think I could risk heading to karratha or tamworth (got my boot scootin fix on raaf pilots course!) for 3 or more years. Sounds like its more difficult to get tower from enroute rather than the other way around but think I may have to take my chances.

Tower, most definitely Tower, especially Class D regional Tower.

Workload is different from en-route and radar towers, but, when you get the hang of it, just the best fun you can have. Does not suit everyone, but give us a try.

TWR & APP ratings are more negotiable assets should you ever wish to transfer.
AREA rating gets you your own country plus the Middle East.
Workwise, both are great fun.
I preferred the atmosphere, hustle & bustle, etc, of a large airport but found TMA/TC area radar to be the best video game in town.

Why do you think so? I've always thought that it's the area rating that allows you to work at more places, because it's the ACC where (at least in some countries and in some sectors) pilots are forced to use English. TWR&APP always requires proficiency in national language.

With TWR/APP ratings in the UK you can go to almost any UK airport, with the UK AREA rating you can go to either Prestwick or NERC. Whichever of these last two you go to you will, most likely, stay for life.

With AREA rating you can go to Bahrain, UAE ACC (not recommended) or Muscat. With TWR/APP ratings you can go to almost any Gulf region airport.

Cheers

So does this mean that enroute will count for pretty much nothing if moving overseas?

Cheers

Is AREA the same as enroute?

In terms of your interest to overseas areas / opportunities to move etc, what is the difference between tower, terminal approach and en route?
