Quintiq rostering tool
I've heard nothing but good reports about the Quintiq specialist ATC rostering/workforce planning packages used by DFS and Nav Canada. Any divergent comments?

If that's ths canadian program using different colours to show different positions/breaks/office work/days off we tried it at Maastricht several years ago but came to the conclusion that a Supervisor with a pencil and a sheet of paper could prouce a better one more quickly. We decided it was not for us as it lacked flexibility.
IIRC the resultant print out looked like Chookie Embra's display of medal ribbons.

Looks like Airservices are keen on it....

It 's 'Qinetic' not 'Qintic'.
They know nothing about ATC or its unique requirements in terms of flexibility eg the ability to have enough people to open extra sectors when required etc. Oh it all works out OK on computer simulations, but they, as we all know, are not the real world.

It is Quintiq but my dutch is non existent so I don't know how they like their name to be pronounced.
Nav Canada bought it two years ago and were due to put in service late 2008 but I've no idea if they have. DFS and Airservices Australia have only just bought it so it's a bit too early to know if it works for them.
I've no idea if it's any good but it's used extensively in other industries with much more complicated rostering requirements than ATC. Personally I can't see how the investment can be justified unless it allows less controllers to cover the same positions which probably means individual rosters and I can't see that being too popular.

All the talk of staffing and opening extra sectors etc is redundant as each sector is scheduled with the amount of controllers required for the tasks. If you don't have enough staff...that is not the fault of the rostering tool.

Qinetic is UK based research/technology entity which evolved out of DERA.
They might have done research into effects of rostering but don't provide a software tool.
Quintiq is the Dutch based rostering software company which produces an ATC rostering software solution.

Already there here in Oz! And with these computer models, I tend to take chevvron's approach; they work fine in the rarified atmosphere of management but in the real world, they are shown up lacking rather quickly.
Hopefully will see if it produces anything favourable at all sooner rather than later.
