"hold for release" vs. "call me when ready to depart"?
I have heard both after receiving my IFR clearance on the ground, and to me they have the same meaning but don't know for sure.
Hold for release means in English "don't go anywhere until we tell you, even if we gave you a clearance"
"when ready to depart" means "call me when all that pilot stuff is done and you can accept your clearance with minimal/no delay"
hope that helps

I would have thought "hold for release" is letting you know the delay on the ground is due to some on-high controller allowing you into their sector.
"report ready to depart" to me sounds like let us know when you can get on the runway and go straight away.

Not sure that I really understand the last question - but if you haven't been cleared to move anywhere, then don't. If you're sitting on the runway when you get either of those instructions then presumably the controller has no other traffic that you will get in the way of.
Yes, just sit there until your release time--- if issued----or until further instructions---I know, I know but it is usually because of air traffic coordination reasons

At a field with a tower (ATC) and they put you on the runway to hold while waiting for your clearance / release then fine.
However,
if you are departing from a non-towered field it probably is not a good idea to sit on the runway awaiting your clearance because;
a) The VFRs that can be buzzing round the circuit will not appreciate it ; and
b) one very good reason for holding you on the ground is that there is an IFR flight inbound - block the runway and have them do a missed approach and you are going to have a much longer wait for that clearance!! - Like possibly until they complete another procedure and land!!
