College Housing help v.over25

If you are over 25 you qualify for Working tax Credits and Housing benefits - be sure to look it all up.
Doing a search through the forum regarding housing and this was mentioned in a post from 2007. Can anybody clarify this for me? I'll be 27 when I start the college and any help is appreciated.

Hiya,

If you're over 25 and single, you're most likely to be eligible for Working Tax Credit (it does depend on you not having substantial savings, etc). Some councils will accept a letter from the college to make you exempt from council tax, but I don't think you're generally eligible for housing benefit.

Hope that helps.

Do you know how this works? I'm currently living in Spain and will be going to the course with very little saved. Thanks for the help!

EU citizens are eligible for the same things as UK citizens as far as this goes. You can only apply once you've started work (or no earlier than one week before you're due to start). You need to phone for an application pack to be sent to you (no online applications) - see HMRC Tax Credits - Do I qualify?, What are tax credits for more details.
