UK Aerodrome Controllers

I'm an aerodrome and procedural approach controller in a non European country and am thinking about retraining to get UK licences.

I've been in touch with the UK CAA and they have advised that they would require a comparison of the syllabus under which I trained then an assessment of prior competence to establish what areas need to be covered in training prior to issuing a UK licence. Does anyone have any experience of whether they are likely to require a large proportion of retraining or would it really be just covering differences?

Also any advice about whether initially qualifying for aerodrome control only would be worthwhile. Are there many units out there with just aerodrome control or are most approach as well?
