This is America, We Speak English

I am shocked by the reaction of that pilot to the controller's ''Hasta La vista''. I don't think the guy deserved that kind of comment . It's rather a nice way of doing his job.

YouTube - Continental pilot tells Air Traffic Control to "Speak English"

Even more 'fun', shows as related. Although another cuppa coffee.
or YouTube - ?? ????? ????? china pilot can't speak English (?????)
Thank heavens quite a few Chinese learn to fly in the USA nowadays so it's at least branded into their brain :-) (I mean, Yank accent)
Yet another case of ICAO Aviation English standards being a laugh for some in int'l flights - or those who administer and uphold the exams and their standards.

Jumbo744.. Please recognise that there is weird humour in aviation, which you will undoubtedly become aware of! I think everyone was having a laugh so don't be too shocked.

Must remember this for the next Continental pilot who doesn't do what he's been told

''This is Britain, and we not only speak English here, we invented it.''

Spelling error corrected

Anglo Saxons dislike use of other languages around them.
Yanks in particular are "anti-Spanish"... Español hurts their eardrums.

Circa 2000, Buenos Aires, I met an old PanAm buddy, who was with United.
They were at the Sheraton/Retiro. I invited him (and F/O) for dinner at home.
My wife, native of Buenos Aires, spoke no English. Was Spanish together.
Great dinner, bife de lomo, best wines, etc...

I translated all conversations. A bit tiring, but I was accustomed to it.
Then wife being present.... these guys criticized us.
"Why dont you teach her to f*** speak English"...?
My wife, despite her limited English, understood what they said.
She suddenly became quite proficient... "Zis is our home"...
I never invited USA friends for dinner at home again.
xxx

Happy contrails

Devil Speaking English in America - Sick

There is no doubt that the USA understanding of speaking English is only overshadowed by their ridiculous belief that they fit in where ever they choose to settle or work in the rest of the world. Basically they are an undisciplined rabble who are so introverted and convinced of their own superiority that they are a laughing stock to the rest of the world. I have seen this first hand in various environments and its sickening to watch; its as if they believe the world really wants to be like them - what could be worse. The one exception I will make is that when a USA citizen actually does realise their place in the world society, they make a good and very worthwhile contribution - but for the other 95% - they should stay at home.

Am I the only one who thinks it is somewhat ridiculous that the reaction of ONE pilot causes this thread to head into a bash-fest against Americans?

Quite a generalisation, especially coming from a Brit.
And we all know that England has such an impeccable record when it comes to asserting its own colonisation.

look in the mirror, baby,
Oz has a great record vis a vis it's own indigenous population?
Sort of making my point there baby

It was the Brits who turned Australia's indigenous population into a minority.

Sorry, didn't mean to create tensions between americans/english/australian guys here
But what shocks me is just that, there shouldn't be that kind of difficult relations between pilots and ATC. I don't understand, the controller is doing a good standard professional job, he ends the comm with a cool ''Hasta La Vista'',and the pilot gets mad at him.

Doesn't he think that maybe next time he flies through that zone, he may need help for whatever reason, and maybe that same controller will be on the frequency doing whatever he can to help him ?

It's one pilot. I have listed to quite a few of these recordings from Boston, and he indeed is an exception.
Yeah so there shouldn't be such difficult relations between pilots and ATC, but in some individual cases, there are.

It's called life.

Regards,

Robert

"ppruneradar......next time the COA pops out of the TMA just give him a BS....he will be happy with that.....cause he doesnt understand what you said!!"

Now, are you suggesting he doesn't know what a BS is, or he won't understand a posh Troon accent ?

I'm with RobertK on this one. It was ONE pilot who, as well as having no sense of humour, has no sense of irony. I'm sure he's a 'lovely' bloke, but he doesn't represent ALL pilots, or Yanks for that matter.

5miles, your statement is at best a distortion of the facts. Australia has been running its own affairs for over 100 years. I'm sure in many ways it is a wonderful country with wonderful people but it doesn't alter the facts.

When did the policies that lead to the Stolen Generations end?
When did the White Australia policy end?
When did Aboriginals get the vote?

Just because Oz is all biscuit *rsed and apologetic now doesn't mean you can blame the Brits for actions that a self-governing Australia was more than happy to carry on, and in some cases implement right through to the 1970s and beyond.

Britain had what's considered a bad record in the 19th century in particular, any other powerful country would have acted the same - it was the way countries and people behaved then. Thankfully times have progressed, though some countries (Oz for one) took a wee bit longer. Now before you return some stones, step away from the glass building. Baby.

You were spot on about the original lazy generalization of the Americans though.
