Helicopter operations at special events

Need some ATC guidance (concept of operations) on helicopter operations at special events. This event will take place within the CTR. Movements at similar events exceeded 400 per hour, although not that much is anticipated. Many thanks

In the UK such events (large motorsport or horse racing gatherings etc) are usually catered for by establishing "temporary licensed heliports or aerodromes" which require regulatory approval from the UK CAA, who have a specialist section within their Aerodrome Standards Department to oversee and give advice.

You could try your own (German?) CAA, or look at Aerodrome Standards | Safety Regulation and follow the links on the left hand side of the page.

Hopefully that'll be of some help.

Hi goatface, thanks for your reply. That link does not explain the helicopter operations as such. How is the helicopter traffic handled there in Silverstone durin F1 I see they have 6 ATC and assistants pumping that traffic Sure they must have a concept of operations there. Thanks a lot

The Silverstone F1 event is one of the specially organised temporary licensed aerodromes, the organiser is Bob Downs 00 44 1932 570260.

In Ireland for the races they set up specially organised temporary licensed aerodromes all with their own frequency, they take off from the airport, routed into the hold(north or south depending on winds) then they are handed off to the temporary licensed aerodrome who gives them instructions to land or they would route them out of that hold and into another one until they can land. The r/t is different though also, each heli has their own callsign, for the Galway races it's "Claddagh XX" the atco would say for example "Claddagh 59, land at pilots discretion on pad Delta, surface winds xxx @ xxkts" etc.

Square-head, having been involved in UK Helicopter Special Events (for too many years) and written the procedures I'd be happy to give you some guidance. Feel free to pm me.
