Mode S receiver stations in the UK. Quantity?

Hello. Firstly, I apologise for failing to correctly set my Mode S on departure from the UK. It was only pointed out to me that the ident was in the incorrect order as we passed western Switzerland.

I asked London for a Mode S check and was told that the facility to read Mode S wasn't available. Did I ask the 'wrong' question (terminology) or are there actually not enough stations modified to read Mode S?

I ask since I've got to buy a Mode S to fly my 1950s homebuilt

TOM 2347 outbound, TOM 2348 return.

A large proportion of Enroute radars are now Mode S, covering most of UK airspace. It's just that not all of the units are ready to use the data.
