exam to get the controller license

Hi everybody:
I am really interested in the exam to get the controller license in the UK. Could anybody tell me something about the exam, especially the contents of the exam.
Do the controlles need to take an overall exam which covers all the fields related to aviation? That means the knowledge of ACC,TWR, APP, MET, NAVIGATION etc. can be seen in one exam paper. That's the way we do in China for the initial controller license, I was wondering is that the way you do in the UK?
I would really appreaciate for any help from anybody of you!
Thank you very much!

In the Uk the written papers were broken down into different subjects, and also dependent on which rating you are studying for. Core papers though are aviation law, Met, aircraft performance, altimetry,Nav, Mats part one, air pilot, and more.. On top of this are numeruous oral boards and sim assessments. (brings a cold sweat thinking of it)

I'm not sure of the current rules, but I believe you have to undergo an approved course of training before you can sit the exams. You can't simply walk in and take the exams.

HD is correct. You need to follow an approved course.

When do the UK controllers get the lecense? After finished the ATC courses or passed the lecense exam which is conducted after entering the ATC units ?

I think there's a solution to undergo a course with ASTAC at Gloucestershire, I think you will have to take the necessary subjects (UK Law, UK phraseology) and than take the exam in front of their state examiners, to get the proper documents so you can undergo a OJT training in the UK (not ICAO).

I was interested in doing this, I think it was around 3-4 weeks (a week for a subject or so) but I would speculate that it cost (or so I remember) around 6 to 7k of the English money. Don't remember if accommodation was included.

This is the private way to do it, to obtain a UK licence.

Cheers.

We get a student license after finishing at the college, this is upgraded to a full license after validating at a unit.
