Heathrow Control Tower

Dear all,

This post is mainly aimed at LL ATCOs although I'd welcome input from anyone, if they feel they can help!

To put it in relatively simple terms, I am currently carrying out a project on the control tower at Heathrow; specifically its structure and construction for my Architectural Technology Degree.

I have managed to acquire a decent amount of working drawings from the Architect of the Tower (RRP), but am also required to look in greater depth into the structure.

I imagined people working at the place on a day-to-day basis, would probably be the ones best qualified to perhaps comment on the working environment inside the Tower in terms of its physical materials, hence my request for help; and the help would be greatly appreciated!

Obviously with the Tower being airside, it's pretty much impossible to get a first-hand look at it.

Perhaps it would help if I were to suggest a few areas in the form of bullet points that I am required to research. If anyone could contribute on some or any of the points I would be most grateful!

- Photographs (interior/exterior)

- Close-up photographs of any interesting structural details

- Advantages/disadvantages of the particular structure that has been implemented (i.e. does the tower sway in gusty winds!!?)

- Glazing; is there a special type being used (i.e. non-frost etc...)

- Hot/cold water distribution (perhaps somewhat of a non-issue inside the actual VCR, but I'm sure you enjoy food and drink elsewhere in the Tower!)

- Air conditioning

- Heating

- Sanitary disposal system

- Electrical power distribution

- Photographs of any of the above named building services

- Are the building services adequate for the intended use of the Tower?

- Exterior cladding/façade of the structure (i.e. its appearance, whether it looks good etc...)

Sorry about the long list! I also realise some areas are a bit specialised and may well be unanswerable, but again, if any help could be given it would whole-heartedly be appreciated!

Feel free to PM if you'd prefer.

Many thanks and a Happy New Year to you all!

If you are after serious information I would suggest an approach to either BAA Plannning & Development at LHR for planning info and/or BAA Engineering for day to day running info. The building is actually owned by BAA & leased to Nats so I think BAA will be able to provide a mountain of info for you.

Thanks LS. I have contacted BAA regarding this and they are in the process of sending me information from their various Engineering departments.

Whilst this will cover most of the more technical or specialized areas of what I am after, I am still interested to know how current ATCO's find the tower in terms of comfort etc...

A very short summary for anyone working there is all that is needed and would be greatly appreciated. The reason I ask is that when working on such a project based on an inaccessible building/structure, at least getting information from those that do use the building shows a good attempt at utilising the best resources possible thus deeming my approach to the project to be intelligent!

not wishing to cast a suspicious eye, but I'm always wary of those fishing for "inside" information - I have possibly spent too long working for NATS. Anyhoo, if your reasons are legitimate (i'm sure they are) BAA are the folks to get in touch with and they may even arrange to take to airside to visit (I would imagine/hope).

Check your PMs SHT6Y.

I can vouch for him, SATAN. (I'll leave it up to you to determine whether that's a good thing!!!)

It very much sounds as if you are trying to find the easiest way to destroy the tower. Although I'm sure that is not what you are after.
