Bravery award for air traffic controller?

Admittedly some cool headed controlling from a relatively inexperienced controller but deserving of a ‘bravery’ award?

Sitting on the ground in safety was never considered ‘brave’ when I controlled but going by this, I should have been awarded a Knighthood by now or at least a few free calls on my mobile courtesy of Vodafone!

An award may be deserved, but for bravery? I can think of several ATCOs who have been in Basrah Tower over the past year who may be more deserving.

Haven't seen it described as a 'bravery award' except in that report. I am sure she is being ragged to bits over it. She did well, let's leave it as that.

Saw her on the news today and she came across very well. First thing she said is that she only did what ANY other ATCO would have done and that she feels uncomfortable about the whole thing. Also stated that she has had loads of ribbing from her colleagues for basically doing her job.

Don't forget - she wouldn't have recommended herself for the award - but in the Mil, good PR is mightier than personal wishes!

I agree that the press may have over played what the controller did, but I would like to give a bit of credit for a job well done.

We can also all revel in the glow that one of our own got recognised for something that we consider to be our duty on a day to day basis.

I commend her for a job well done, any atco would have tried to do the same.
As said before though good old PR played a big part in this, and many stories and tasks of atco's go by without mention.
At least 1 has had some recognition.

The ATC forum admins would endorse the above. She did what we would all have done, and do regularly all over the world in many different situations ... but well done to her for being the one who has been identified publicly

I agree with most of the comments, when you have been around for a while you clock up incidents like this; either personally or through close colleagues. Hopefully not too many in a career. I always felt that the military had a good system with their awarding of a "Good show." perhaps the phrase was a bit corny but it always seemed to me to be a corporate morale booster which we lacked in the civil side. I suspect that in this case the PR was usurped by the press, after all it's a "good news" story for christmas.

I concur with what everyone has previously written. Okay, the bravery thing is a bit tenuous. But what the heck, a young inexperienced ATCO has done a thoroughly good job and been recognised for it. I always liked the 'Good Show' system in the RAF. Praise given, where praise is due. Now that I'm across on the civil side, it's disappointing something similar cannot be set up in NATS. I've suggested it a few times, but nothing has ever come of it. Or perhaps there's no money involved Or is that just the old cynic in me

If you go to http://www.vodafonebusiness.co.uk/lifesavers you will see no mention of bravery, they are honoring 'lifesavers'. She did, & well done. Yes, she was just doing her job, but so were the Ambo's who were awarded as well.
