Originally posted on the Military forum, but it was suggested I should also post here (there may be some 'slightly older' ex mil controllers who remember Les from his time flying JPs for the 'live tower' for the ATC courses at Shawbury). Les died on Friday after a very short illness (less than a week) aged 84 or 86 (there is some debate!). Up until then,he had been fit and active. His widow, Kate, is ex mil ATC.

Hello Oldbeefer.
I don't remember Les personally but certainly remember the live radar training with the JP's. Pity they don't still carry out that phase of training any more. When did they finish with the live and go fully simulator based?

I am sorry to hear of Les's passing - he certainly gave it a run for it's money. I was one of Les's 'lookers' on the Shawbury Piston Provosts and Vampire T11s back in the mid-sixties. He was one of those who introduced me to the pleasures of 'Market Day' in Wem. Until that time I had no idea that locally produced beer could prove so awful to consume! (Wem Ales?)

I remember, on one occasion, him inviting me to ask Kate a particular question. I should have known better by the twinkle in his eye as the colourful language that emanated from her lips would put a Jack Tar to shame! I can see him collapsed with laughter in the corner now at the sight of my very embarrassed young face!

Set them up Les. We'll all be along at some point.
