Well the people of Sipson are unlikely to complain about the noise. They will have moved somewhere quiet with the wad of compulsory purchase money they will need to be offered. If they dig their heels in deep enough, they should do quite well out of it.

What lies beneath...
Given the shortage of space at LHR would building a massive underground car park or other space hogging infrastucture beneath the new runway be feasible or desirable?

Given the long planning that has gone in to the 3rd runway, I would have expected BAA to have been purchasing all the houses that came onto the market in Sipson/Harmonsworth for some years, then renting them back out to make some income from them (enough to cover the interest costs on buying them) but enabling them to clear them out reasonably quickly when required. On average 5 to 7 years is long enough to acquire more than 50% of the properties in any given area.
One thing that does surprise me is the substantial mineral extraction that continues on the land to the south of the M4 east of junction 4, and right where runway 3 will be. All that aggregate being excavated from there is all going to have to go back !

How long have you got Chev?
But regardless of those arguments for expansion on the grounds of growth...
If Heathrow never grows by a single movement that runway has BEEN desperately needed for many years. There is no slack in the Heathrow operation and this is putting unacceptable pressure on the ATC infrastructure.
