I have been invited to sit my Stage 1 test however I have informed that I am putting my application on hold until July due to final year Uni exams. I am likely to go and do mine in Prestwick because from home (Manchester) they are pretty much equal distance, however, I expect it to be less busy on the roads heading up north rather than down south!
Regarding accomodation, I am probably going to book at a Premier Inn or anything local.

Yes all the tests take place on the same day.
Numeracy tests are based on Speed, Distance, Time calculations. GCSE level maths will suffice I'd say. It is the speed they are worried about in this test not your Post Doctoral thesis on the meaning of numbers

A doubt
You travel 12 miles. How much fuel will you need if you burn 150 kgs per hour, and are travelling at 90 mph?
I have a big doubt: my reasoning is the following:
Travelling at 60mph--> 12min for 12 miles
Travelling at 120mph--> 6 min for 12 miles
Yet, if I travelled at 90mph--> 9 min for 12 miles, shouldnt that be right?????, proportional calculations.
Well no, the solution is 20, which is 0,1333 (8minutes) X 150 and not 0,15 (9minutes).
Why is this???

Yeah, thanks it helps, I understand it better now, yet it still foxes me coz I would calculate many problems through proportionality but it seems as it's not always like that, so, when do I know if I can apply or not the correlative calculation?

when do I know if I can apply or not the correlative calculation?
You have to look at the proportions slightly differently.
If you're going from 60 mph to 120 mph you are multiplying by 2. Therefore to calculate the change in minutes you multiply by (1/2) [2 x 1/2 = 1]. So 12 minutes x 1/2 = 6 minutes. This, as we know, is correct.
Therefore:
If you're going from 60 mph to 90 mph you are multiplying by 3/2. Therefore to calculate the change in minutes you multiply by (2/3) [3/2 x 2/3 =1]. So 12 minutes x 2/3 = 8 minutes.
I hope this makes sense.

It's a bit of a mess anyway coz in order to what you are asked for, you apply one method of calculation or other, there's no one straight way of doing it. It's relative.

Would it be worth starting a separate thread for resources and information about each stage. So that new people are not recycling old questions? It might help to have it all nicely laid out, and in a new place - perhaps entitled 'NATS Testing Guide' ?

preaching to the converted my friend.. but perhaps a stickied topic would enable even the least initiative prone candidate to find what they need without necessarily recycling questions?
Of course this thread would remain useful for questions for which the answers were not covered in the 'guide'.

Any other faster way of resolving this that isn't doing 611/705= and multiply solution by 60...???????

Two aircraft travelling to Waypoint Z. One aircraft 75 miles away travelling 450 mph, second aircraft 50 miles away travelling 550mph. Who will get there quicker and by how much?
is the answer the second aircraft? as the first one would get there in about 10 minutes ( 1/6 = 10 mins) and the second one is 1/11 ( which I think is about 5.5 minutes?)

Hi Wonton.
I had the exact same problem finding the test centre...and actually missed the 9am exam and had to go to the 1pm exam. If your driving in to Prestwick airport from Glasgow go straight ahead at the 3 roundabouts....you'll think your going the wrong way as it looks like your entering an industrial estate...but your on the right path, keep looking right as your driving and you'll go through some traffic lights then eventually will see the 'NATS' sign (however keep a proper eye out for it as it's sorta camoflaged). Or, if you get the train....get a taxi from Prestwick Airport (I'm sure they will know where it is) shouldn't cost you too much either. Or...send me a pm with your e-mail address and I can send you the map that NATS sent me to find the centre once I missed my first exam...wouldn't wish that feeling on anyone lol.
