It will probably be easier to get a gig overseas than into mainstream Aussie ATC.
AsA seems to not quite have the plot...they are short of staff, recruiting overseas to fill the gaps, and now are trying to win expat contracts and fill them from OZ???
What I want to know, is that if they win the gig in Bahrain, will any of the guys that were found unsuitable for the "global Search" that are currently working in Bahrain, get the sack?

From reading the AsA recruiting pages it seemed they are expecting the current controllers to come running and fill with only 5 AsA controllers from oz. They are not recruiting Tower or App and are expecting Bahraini's to fill these spots.
Everything is based on a 3 year contract, paid accomodation allowance, education allowance, bonus and retirement bonus. No actual amounts stated but sounding much more in the style of a ME contract than the usual AsA stuff. ie No overtime (hard to believe ).
I agree it is just a sounding out operation at the moment but with such a rumoured poor safety record in Bahrain maybe they will welcome AsA to put pressure on the other providers...
Of course, after SDE a lot of surplus controllers will be able to be released

I heard they want 15 'controllers' from the ASA ranks to go to make it viable; where are they getting them from; can anyone describe the airspace structure?
Would love to see if LWOP will be available; did someone mention the Sth African 'experiment'? Less pay, no allowances and still not a cracker in it for the company; still I'm sure the (oil) "fields are greener" in the ME.

asa bahrain contract
my question is,
with a **** load of locals leaving the bahrain DCA, they are no doubt short staffed already, are they going to take on the current staff?
Also, when does the bahrain contract come up for renewal?

The question is can ASA find 15 controllers within their own ranks willing and able to mix their 20/25/30 commercial aircraft through the carrier ops bomb burst of fighters. I doubt it. ASA don't know what they are getting themselves into, and will get a nasty shock if they actually win the contract and see what happens over here on a daily basis.

The airspace is a total fup . I could not believe my eyes when I last visited.
Controllers are running 25+ on frequency - no SIDs nor STARs into/out of either BAH , DOH or DHA. BALUS entry point I believe is a nightmare with Abu Dhabi Centre putting 3 parallel on headings with scant regard of BAH's problem of the same amount bieng launched out of QATAR - all meeting head-on at URITO

They also state that prority of OZ ops will be the basis for release.
At least SA was an experiment that didn't go ahead, by all accounts the Pacific Towers lose money hand over fist. Doesn't matter, OZ users I am sure you will agree don't mind subsidising them.

Another point to remember is that while Bahrain is undoubtedly busy it should be remembered that all those BALUS aircraft have just been threaded through all our Asian bound Qatar departures and also our Doha bound Qatar arrivals, so they are not on their Pat Malone when it comes to crazy traffic situations. Try coming and watching UAE Central any morning of the week.

For all the reams of anectdotal evidence, hearsay etc about this lot; at the very least SOME of it must be fact and that nothing but nothing is changing or has ever changed since GBE 's first inception about the never ending list of issues of incompetence, dysfunction ad nauseum says WHAT about civil air, management, the Board, the politician in charge?
For cryng out loud what is needed to get these people motivated to IMPROVE!!!!! Some of us are crying out to be proud of the organisation and the profession that we are involved with. All the IATA awards in the world don't mean nothing if they don't reflect reality.

Bit harsh, I know of at least one o/s controller and 3 locals that took the plunge...
Ok, you're right pretty dismal considering it was a "global search".
Perhaps it had something to do with the time it took to make offers, conduct testing??? The poor pay enticing controllers to jump from greener pastures?

I don't know the exact numbers but there are quite a few, spread over (I think) about four courses. More than 5 (myself included) from the UK alone, and I believe quite a bunch of Seffs.
Within the world of "top line" ATC I really don't think the grass is greener overall in any particular state/company. They all have good points and bad, and over a few years familiarity can indeed breed contempt. Certainly the transition from UK to Oz has been anything but smooth, but I think that in the long run the result for me & my family should be good. I also wouldn't dissuade anyone from trying to go the other way!
In the mean time, I wish everyone a peaceful Christmas and a very happy New Year.

No offence meant I'm sure to any OS recruits. DNS may have been referring to OS ATC in the field and rated as one (in BNE?). After what seems like an eternity of recruiting etc.
There are more to come, some field training, some simulating and more in the college and we eagerly await them checking out (so we can do less OT).

150 in a year! Even if we ran a course of 12 every month we still couldn't get them into the field in 2008, let alone find a classroom for them. We are battling to find enough quality applicants to fill a couple of courses a year. The ATC salary is no longer competitive with many other jobs. Many quality applicants can't afford the 12 month pay cut while they train.
The recruitment section has ceased to exist, I hear, with a double resignation, so who's going to to run all the aptitude testing? A new ab initio course is due in about April, I've heard, but who's going to send out the letters of offer?
In January we will have 5 courses in the college with a total of 6 sim instructors. At least 6 TAAATS instructors are needed per course to make the sim work. That's going to delay course completion dates.

"Da Man" who restructured training got an Australia Day Award for doing so.
Surely you are not suggesting that he got it wrong!!!?????!!???!?!?
OH, hang on, Training is reverting to the previous structure so maybe he did get it wrong and will hand back his Award?
Or will he do to FDCs and ausfic as he did to training. "Flightwatch VHF not available due staff shortages" did I hear you say? hmmmm....he is already at work it seems.

150 certainly does stretch credulity! However, it could also somewhat explain management optimism in the face of the staffing situation. Of course, we know it can't possibly happen that way. There are nowhere near the number of instructors to do anything with those numbers.
Guess the OZ day award will be handed over to the manager that can fix it up!

So that leaves only around 60 who will finally check out and the end of the day. Pretty crap numbers when you look at it, and they (AsA) management will never manage to make up the shortfall as i suspect they will lose at least 30 plus (to o/s, mainly ME) over the next six months or so, which means they will be over 100 short by June 2008, which will have them on the ropes. They will never catch up, period.
This does not even take into account those over 50 who might actually decided to throw the towel in and retire, or those who may get redundancy if Civil Air have a win at the IRC over the ALM hiring screw up.
They are stuffed but they dont know it as they just cant see it. Watch this space in 08 for the final play.
