Apprenticeships in ATC?
Hello everyone,
I am a new member, perhaps the youngest here, I'm 15, currently in secondary school, year 11 and some choices ahead of me as to what I doing for A levels.
I have always wanted to become an air traffic controller and it has become my ambiton, my hope is applying at the age of 18...
However,
I would like to enquire about whether there are any air traffic control apprenticeships at all?
Probably a silly question but I thought I would ask here most appropriate place.
Sorry for offending any one in any such way, I know you like to have a bit of a banter round here!
Thank you

re apprentice.....
there's a coule of ways you can go to becoming a controller. the first and most direct route is to apply to one of the larger ATC providers eg. NATS - check their web site for what qualifications they require etc - when i applied it was 2 A levels and 5 GCSE's but that may have changed since they lowered the wage! if you get accepted and pass all the tests they train you either tower, approach or area depending on their requirements so you dont have a say as such.
the other option would be to get a job at smaller airports eg. southend as an air traffic controllers assistant with the chance of then being trained up.
good luck

Not a silly question at all!!!
As crewman said there are a variety of options available -
NATS
Non NATS airfield
Paying for your rating yourself (expensive and no guarantee of a job!)
RAF
Eurocontrol
It might be worth checking out what you want to do as it may affect your choice of A levels
For NATS it used to be 5 GCSE (including maths and english) and to have studied 2 A levels one of which must be either maths, geography, biology, physics or chemistry ( This may have changed - check to web site or contact HR)
Good Luck

Tell you what, that young man at the top of the page ain't far wrong when he mentions the word 'apprenticeship'. Most apprentices don't get paid much in other jobs either!
Blimey, I can remember when it were 5 GCE O levels and studying 2 subjects to A level, none of which had to be maths, geography, biology, physics or chemistry. Didn't realise science subjects were needed to tell pilots what to do! And there's me with only Ancient History and Business Studies A levels.

Well wehn I applied about 4ish months ago you had to have 5 GCSEs (incl English and Maths I believe) and have Studied to a further level, e.g. two A levels... but you didn't actually have to pass them... This allows people to apply before they take their exams..

Well I did say studied!!! - that's what it was when I applied - I'm not sure what the relevance of the subjects were either - still you did used to need to have a degree many years ago - long before my time though!!!

What 126.825 is saying is the salary for someone at the NATS college is lower than it used to be. What he fails to mention is the salary of a valid Air Traffic Controller within NATS actually goes up every year! Top of the pay scale is approx £85,000 in the UK!
