EFPS at EGKK
I hear that the grand switching on of EFPS at Gatwick didn't go to smoothly, or at all last night. The old paper strips not prepared to give up without a fight!

EFPS has nothing to do with the message about calling for clearance. Until recently a Sqawk was issued at EOBT -38 mins, thus clearance was available at this time. Now a Squawk is issued at EOBT+taxi time (25 mins atm due software problem / 20 mins normally in summer / 15 mins winter) -38 mins. Therefore a clearance is not available until a maximum of 18 mins before EOBT. If several flightplans have the same EOBT the 1st to be printed on the strip printer is printed at this time, meaning it is possible that a clearance will not be available until EOBT -15 mins.
hence asking for crew to not call for a clearance any earlier as one is not available.
I hope that that makes more sense than it reads back to me !!!
When EFPS is up and running clearances should once again be available at EOBT -38 mins. I think!!!

Dragging us back onto topic... ;)
In fact, with EFPS the requirement to call 15 before EOBT is not as important. In a paper strip environment, we need you to call for clearance some time before start to give us chance to process that information . ie sending pre-warnings to TC to activate the strips in the right places.
With EFPS all the message action is carried out instantaneously by the electronics so it is much easier to handle a call for clearance from someone who wants start right away. No more waiting for the message to be sent.

Thanks for that; it makes sense ok. The only difficulty it poses is that, in the Lcc environment, things are getting a bit frenetic at Eobt -10 whereas -15 enabled us to get certain bits of briefing out of the way in good time and allowed us to concentrate on getting off blocks on time. No matter, we'll work round it.
Thanks to all Lgw Atc - fantastic service!

Not totally sure as I haven't worked with EFPS yet but I understand your clearance will now be available 38 mins before EOBT. As LLC stated it is now not a problem for you to call for push/start and clearance at the same time as the required messages will be sent automatically to terminal control rather than manually previously.
Hopefully this will suit all crews.

Don't think that clearances will be available -38. They only appear at stansted -25, again to free up squawks I believe. As usual I stand to be shot down in flames !!!!!!!!!

Vlad, you're right.
At the moment, to conserve squawks, we're actually getting the clearance information (SID & Squawk) populated onto the electroneic strip about 13 minutes before EOBT. It is possible to acquire the information if needed before that time, but this takes a handful of "button" presses and then a wait for response from the system.
