ATCOs for Gibraltar
Hi MRNOBODY
There is a tender exercise in progress between Serco, NATS and Safeskys for the Gibraltar contract.
If Safeskys wins (decision in June 2005 for a Jan 06 start) they will initially offer the 10 ATCOs on the contract their current jobs. If any decide to move back to the UK with Serco then Safeskys will have vacancies.
Safeskys preferred route for the recruitment of ATCOs for Gibraltar is to seek ex-RAF/RN ATCOs who hold a UK CAA ADC validated rating. We would employ them initially as ADC ATCOs and send them on a UK radar course after they had validated their ADC rating in Gibraltar.
The next option is to look at ADC/APR rated ATCOs and the third option is to look at ADC only ATCOs with a view to offering them a radar course once validated.
So if you are interested go to www.safeskys.co.uk and send your CV using the webpage Contact Information.

If the majority of the current staff elected to remain with Serco, how would Safeskys run the radar with ADC staff only ? Getting staff on and through radar courses is very time consuming and expensive; it would also deplete manning levels to an unacceptable level on the scale suggested or would have to be spread over an excessive timescale.
Are Safeskys running any other ATC contracts subject to CAA licensing requirements?

Barnwood, Read the words !!!!
We clearly stated 'Safeskys preferred route'.......
We would only propose to have one ADC rated ATCO going through radar training at any one time. Clearly, the contract could not carry lots of trainees.
If all the ATCOs left then any contractor would need to replace them with ADC/APR rated ATCOs (Visit the website www.safeskys.co.uk to apply), however, although the possibility that all the ATCOs could leave is remote, there are contingency plans in place to train up enough ATCOs to man the tower in both positions in the 6 months phase-in period. If only a couple leave then our preferred route is feasable.
We do talk to CAA SRG and always discuss our plans with them.

Definition of an ATC contractor - someone who's prepared to shaft employee and customer alike in order to turn a quick buck

Offer of accomodation? It ain't the middle east you know. The current service provider made no accomodation provision or paid any accomodation allowance when they took on the contract, apart from a settling in week or two in a free flat when you first arrived. The tower only guys ended up paying nearly a third of their salaries in rent if they wanted to live in Gib rather than La Linea.

It isn't a tax free salary either..... in fact the Gibraltarian income tax is generally higher than in the UK. So anyone wanting a tax free salary in subsidised accomodation had better look a bit further east.
Having said that, Gib isn't such a bad place work. Better brush up on your Spanish for the future if the airport goes joint-use though.

Accommodation
TCAS
We wouldn't give you a tent on the beach.... for you its at the end of the runway to ensure that you are never late for your shift !!
Actually we will give you an accommodation allowance of £5,000 + p.a. In future may we suggest that you ask - don't assume.
You see Safeskys is not your normal ATC contractor, we actually care about staff. Ask any of our employees.

Its very unlikely that Safeskys would get anywhere with their "bid", but if they did, Serco would almost certainly undermine them by retaining existing staff on fully paid "gardening leave".
As far as I know, and please correct me if I am wrong, Safeskys is not only "not your normal ATC Contractor", but has not been the contracted ATC Provider to supply the full quota of ATCOs at any UK airport for a number of years, if ever.
They scare birds very well, so they may have a use in Gibralter, but I can't see them being considered for anything else.

£5000 plus per anum towards housing accomodation, from safeskys ,very generous,
does that mean they sold the caravan advertised on their web site that used to accomodate their staff at a uk contract, or more likely they cant be arsed to tow it through france and spain ?

I'm curious as to housing prices on the other side of the road, in La Linea. Probably not where I'd really want to live, but there are some nice places (away from that oil refinery / chemical works place on the road out).
Walking to work from the Spanish side is shorter anyway.

Hi Man Friday,
Our accommodation offer of a caravan at Exeter Airport was for a bird controller on a temporary 4 month contract at about £10,500 p.a. Therefore our offer of a free caravan (which we bought for him) was not only fair but generous and appropriate.
£5,000+ for the Gibraltar contract for accommodation allowance is the going rate for a fine house in Spain. As is mentioned elsewhere, if you want to live in Gib, pay the extra. Its your choice !!
By the way, we have had plenty of CVs for the ATCO jobs so it is obviously a popular place to work.
